Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Food prices have sharply risen all over the world both in the West as well as in the East. Sadly our infighting makes us blind to the facts and we end up blaming Pakistan and Pakistani government.

Afghanistan is appealing to the international community to provide extra supplies of wheat to alleviate a shortage, an Afghan minister has said.

Commerce Minister Mohammad Amin Farhang said the shortage could lead to serious problems during the winter.

His call came amid rising discontent inside Afghanistan at the spiralling cost of wheat and other basic food.

Afghanistan does not grow enough wheat to feed all its people and is partially dependent on imports.

Growing pressure

Mr Farhang made his comment in an interview with German’s Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung newspaper.

“The situation is serious,” he said.

Kabul has come under increasing pressure to take action, amid rising grain prices on the international market.

And the political crisis triggered by the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has led to a reduction in wheat shipments from Pakistan.

Some people also blame shortages on the fact that wheat is being smuggled out of Afghanistan to neighbouring Tajikistan.

In some areas, the price of bread has doubled or even quadrupled.

“Food prices have gone up and no-one can afford to buy all the food they need,” said a resident of Lashkar Gar, the capital of the southern Helmand province.

“A 100kg of flour is about 3,300 Afghanis ($67), and poor people will not be able to afford to pay this at all. The government should do something about it,” he added.

Helmand is one of the worst-affected areas - some say partly because local farmers have increasingly switched from growing wheat to the more lucrative opium poppy.

But the insurgency also plays a part. Worsening security limits the amount of aid getting to violence-torn provinces in the south.

There has been an increasing clamour in the Afghan press with columnists questioning why the government has not stockpiled supplies of grain.

This week, Kabul moved to ease concerns, cancelling a tax on imported grain until the end of the Afghan year, which ends in March, and reducing the tax on imported cooking oil.

But some ministers say the situation remains serious.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

We dont blame Pakistan, we blame Pakistani govt and the dictator...

The two are not synonomous.

We had a bumper harvest so shouldnt there be a decrease in food prices and more availability?

And shouldnt the boom in the economy have meant that rising iflation would be mitigated by rising income????

Inflation happens, but when your claiming to be in an economic boom time, your incomes should rise with the inflation.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

^^ come on yaara, some logical reply plz. Food shortage is worldwide, oil is crossing 100$+. What you except from gov ? I agree their is inflation in Pakistan, but income is also rose in last few years.

Look at the map of south asia, ajeeb o gareeb situation hai ..Thank Mushi, atleast Pakistan exists.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

The problem with Pakistanis is that they are always looking to score political points rather than seeing or even understaning the bigger picture. That includes the global realities and economic situation worldwide.

For Pakisanis one-upmanship is be all or end all. They never highlight the positive steps taken by the nation. They will take every opportunity put down the nation.

It is easy for armchair politicians sitting behind their keyboards in western countries, to blame the govt. for everything, rather than understanding what is causing the price hikes.

Believe me, if it had not been for the investement and great economic achievement of the past eight years, Pakistan would have been finished with the global crisis that have been taking shape over the past few years.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Yes the problem is point scoring like in this thread Mush supporters trying their best to say it is a world wide phenomenon not Pakistan govt's fault. Personality worship at it's worst, Pakistan jaye bahhar mein so long as no one say anything against mush because he can do no wrong. Guess what, there is another world out there who can see through this personality cult, so wake up.

The only person responsible for the economic development of Pakistan in the last few years, Shaukat Aziz has been sent packing by our great dictator, who himself doesn't even know the ABC of economics, he is champion when it comes to make a mess of Pakistan, just look at his incompetence in handling every problem during hte last year.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Don't worry, Zaradri will save Pakistan. Won't he?

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Difficult to say which one is a bigger incompetent Mush or Zardari, take your pick.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Pakistan exists despite Mush... Since he has been in power, there has been increased resentement within the country between provinces, and we are practically at civil war in two of four provinces!
So why should I thank Mush for that?

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Truly, we all had stars in our eyes when Mush came.. But some of us were mature enough to realize the obvious. As I look back now, all I see are examples of Mush incompetance, which I passed of at the time as simple miscalculation or propaganda...

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

How can one dispute the credentials and positive contribution made by Zaradri. Zardari, the chairman of PPP, is the man to save Paksitan. :D

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Equating Pakistan with a ragtag shanty town like Afghanistan to make sense of the food crisis in Pakistan – that’s brilliant !!!

Afghanistan has been surviving on foreign aid crumbs for ages – they’ve no economy to talk about at all. Hence if those war mongers & opium producers are begging for food, its understandable. But in case of Pakistan, we’ve a supposedly booming economy with all kinds of healthy indicators of various sectors of economy being touted by the dictator and we did have a bumper wheat crop past year and still people have been forced out on the streets like beggars.

In which western country have you seen long lines in front of grocery stores because the country is suffering from food shortage??

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

We blame Musharraf. End of story.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Punjab was a bread basket for the entire Subcontinent... Why are we now suddenly beholden to problems arrising in other parts of the world? Punjab and Sindh to to some extent were at one time consdered among the most fertile and productive areas of the subcontinent and yet today we are dealing with food shortages and price hikes!

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

And there lies the crux of the matter......blame this person because of his ethnic origins and ignore all facts. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Sindh was, until brother Punjab started stealing water from Sindh.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

His credentials are put to shame when you compare the unprecedented growth in lawlessness under our great leader.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

700 shia professionals were killed in broad daylight under your feudalocracy rule. No one was caught until Mush started banning the terrorist parties and catching and killing the culprits.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

You need to read your history… Punjab saw a green revoltiuon under the British govt. Who do you think built all the canals??? Punjab was the breas basket of Britsh India, the British wanted to change the agricultural landscape so that they wouldnt have to rely on sources which werent as efficient and reliable as those in Punjab.

"CANAL IRRIGATION

After their colonization of Punjab, the British followed a policy of rapid agricultural development. Canal irrigation was a primary input for that purpose. The Upper Bari Doab Canal was the first one to be built in 1860-61. It principally aimed at generating employment to rehabilitate the disbanded Sikh army personnel. It took off from the Ravi at Madhopur to irrigate 526,084 hectares in the districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Lahore, the last district now being a part of Pakistan.

The Sirhind Canal was completed by 1887. It irrigated 728,424 hectares in the districts of Firozepur, Ludhiana and parts of the princely states of Patiala, Nabha, Faridkot, Jind, Malerkotla and Kalsia."

And thank your dictator for improving the water supply and sharing system… But then, you never blame him for anything that goes wrong, but if anything is right, he is the first to get the credit…

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

bread basket before partition right, bhai jaan zameen utni hi hai, abadi kafi zaida ho gai hai..

If you just blame gov and mush then their is nothing to talk.

Re: Should we blame Pak or Pak government for food crisis in the world?

Well pin a rose on Mushies nose... I think we should now go after the MQM terrorists who murdered and injured so many people on March 12... Wonder why he doesnt go after them?
