Was having a discussion with Vidura about judging the ladies engaged in this profession. We arrived at a fork in the road when it came to whether the ladies should be accepted as any person working for a living. And whether they deserve more or less respect than their clients.
Maybe this topic has appeared before. In the spirit of potential de ja vu all over again, should this profession be legalized. And do the ladies deserve a break from the judjmental public ( some of whom may be clients).
I don't think it should be legalised...it might just add to the problem of human trafficking...
I also don't feel that they should be treated with less respect...because I feel a lot of them are forced in to the situation they are in, as very young girls they could have been forced into it, raped, sexually abused at home, kidnapped, drugged into doing it...you never know what brought them to this point in their lives...and when they are older they probably don't know how to get out of it, because they haven't done anything different, and also am sure they are afraid of what society thinks of them...so they just stay in the whole that they are in...
^yes..that is my opinion...if you choose it out of free will coz you are too darn lazy to find a better job for yourself, then I don't have much respect for you...because I don't think you have to sell your body to earn a living...this is my personal opinion..everyone else can have different opinions on this...

Wouldn't legalizing and regulating it prevent underage, trafficked and drugged girls from being taken advantage of. Right now this profession is illegal hence controlled by criminals. Legalizing it would cause a massive drop in revenues for the criminals, especially those who provide protection to such operations. It'd be mandatory for them to be tested for drugs and disease every six months in order to keep their licence.
As for respecting a prostitute, they deserve to be protected by the law too and legalizing the profession would help do that.
How is it going to add to the problem of human trafficking? Well it's create a new immigration or H1B category. Prostitutes the skilled workers of today.
I'm not talking about Pakistan. Not that there is no prostitution here, but in Islamic countries the law treats coitus as something exclusive to marriage. So there is no way prostitution can be legalized over here.
This goes to shows that implementation of laws depend on public perception too, in addition to the utility they present. I doubt US legalizing the profession, because they're fairly religious over there, especially down South.
Yes. I am in favor of doing this in India. This would dis-empower the pimps. Prostitute unions and self-help groups should be created. Their income needs to be taxed. Pricing and anti-monopoly mechanisms need to be established.

Good idea !!!
closing our eyes does not make the problem go away. In a country like India, I think it is the need of the hour.
Here I would like to narrate a small incident .... Had been to a pub in Bangalore and there was this guy sitting next to us. After sometime he came and introduced himself as a "Relationship Management Expert" and handed over his card to us. I was clueless about what this guy was upto, but my friends realized what he was(a p!mp) and asked him to bugger off.

This. For all those who are against legalizing it, please suggest an alternate solution to the problem.
To reiterate Saeed, all those in favor of legalization have stated the reasons - all from my POV very valid ones.immediate outcomes
1) cut out middle man - the pimp
2) remove associated crimes
3 decrease unnecessary imprisonment of the ladies and their clients ( mostly the ladies)
4) prevent e ploitafion of these ladies by police
5) free up govt resources - rather than waste money incarcerating use money to educate test and prevent transmission
6) use saved money to provide job training for ladies who want to pursue other options.
And several more reasons.
Look forward to the folks with NO as a response to provide some reasons.
Legalizing isn't a solution without flaws. The prostitution is still there. It's just that the associated vices are brought under control.
Elimination of the profession would require support programs for kids and teens, so that they never enter the profession and get into some other profession. Curbing illegal Immigration, stricter legal immigration. It'd basically require stopping the supply, because the demand for the profession can't be curbed.
Stricter drug control laws, because a person can stoop to any level to get his next fix.
