Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India? Indian music artistes respond Click here to add this article to My Clips

Ever since 26/11, sections of Bollywood have been campaigning to keep Pakistani artistes out of India and Mumbai. Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali’s multi-city tour this month was abruptly cancelled, leaving the musician who has been to India, repeatedly dazed and hurt. But the ban-the-Paki brigade is relentless. Some feel this is just a ploy by an under-employed lazy brood of Bolly entertainers to gain advantage in a market, that’s fuelled by talent regardless of where it comes from. Adnan Sami recalls an amusing incident. On a flight from Karachi to Mumbai he spotted a Bollywood singer who had tirelessly tried to ban Adnan in Mumbai. Interestingly, a lot of musicians failed to reply to the survey. Maybe they were afraid to face the music.

Shaan: “A ban is harsh and against the creative tenets of music. Proper paper work and a work permit visa should be adhered to. Rules will have to be respected by all. Artistes like Ghulam Ali Saab are legends who should be adored and revered”.

Shekhar (Vishal-Shekhar): “Instead of wasting time on banning Pakistani musicians, we should look into improving the conditions for our own musicians. Musicians are musicians. Whether they’re Indian, Pakistani or British doesn’t matter. It would be really stupid to ban Pakistani singers from performing in India. Just as Indian artistes cannot be blamed for terrorism in Pakistan, Pakistani artistes cannot be blamed for terrorism in India.”

Sunidhi Chauhan: “No comments”

Alka Yagnik: “No, the artiste in me says that it’s not right to ban a great artiste like Ghulam Ali on the basis of his kaum.”

Babul Supriyo: “This isn’t an easy question to answer. We artistes, regardless of our nationality, are for the people and by the people, and of the people. Our audience liked a few Pakistani artistes and made them overnight stars, much bigger than in their own country. I guess that’s why our entrepreneurs felt inclined to use their talents. We can’t blame music companies alone for promoting Pakistanis. We have to assume collective responsibility for it. Let’s have a concert of Pakistani musicians and singers and throw it open to the Indian audience. Banning is not a solution.”

Adnan Sami: “Should America ban Canadian and British musicians? Do we buy music according to caste creed or nationality or because we love music per se? We only spread love and harmony through our music. Whatever happened to the belief that music has no boundaries? Instead of wasting time jumping on the ‘banned’ wagon musicians should just concentrate on creating good music. And by the way, why just Pakistani musicians? Why not ban kebabs and cuisine from across the border?”

Kumar Sanu: “The Pakistani musicians are getting their name and fame in India. While the Pakistan’s government allows their musicians to come to India, our musicians are not allowed to go there. We must stop them.”

Abhijeet Sawant: “Why shouldn’t we ban Pakistani musicians? We all respect the Pakistani people but we need to protest against their government. We can’t do anything that would have a negative impact on our country. We respect them but not more than our own country. I don’t think we should show any Pakistani on Indian television.”

Farhan Akhtar: “It’s not right to ban a musician like Ghulam Ali. He’s an artiste and he has nothing to do with what’s happening. Such knee-jerk reactions are detrimental to the future.”

Aadesh Shrivastava: “I’ve no objection to Pakistani artistes coming to India. But they should be worth it. I’m a great fan of Raahat Ali, Abida Parveen and Ghulam Ali Saab and when Ghulam Ali Saab was prevented from coming to Mumbai, I was greatly pained, because he has nothing to do with what happened to Mumbai. However, has he bothered to make one statement against the 26/11 attacks? Considering how welcoming we’ve always been, it seems only right for someone like Ghulam Ali Saab to speak out against terrorism. We always extend the utmost hospitality to Pakistani artistes. But they should also learn to appreciate what we do for them. So many musicians and comedians were nobodies back home. We made them celebrities in Mumbai. Who knew Adnan Sami before he came to Mumbai? All I say is, when they come here, they must have the proper respect for our hospitality and work permit. When I recorded in the US with Wyclef Jean, I not only had the relevant papers, I also paid taxes over there. Do the Pakistani artistes in India follow these basic rules?”

Gulzar: “Let’s not make a larger issue of a very specific and critical situation. Mumbai has been through a trauma. And there was no need for Ghulam Ali Saab to choose this time to perform in Mumbai and other cities in India. This is no time for events and celebrations. He’s a regular visitor to our country and more than welcome during normal times.”

Pritam Chakraborty: “No, musicians from Pakistan should not be banned in our country. I am both angry and sad for the 26/11 attack, and upset that the whole thing originated on Pakistani soil. But that’s politics and has nothing to do with music. Musicians all over the world have no caste creed or religion. As a knee-jerk reaction, we should not ban Pak singers from performing here. The problem lies in politics not music.”

my say: Pakistan should ban Indian stuff in Pakistan!!! after all the insult by the indian media of Pakistan… our very responsible media is still going bonkers over Indian celebs and movies!!! our stars should stay in Pakistan and make our own industry more powerful… right now all the ppl who are going there are going for theirself… not for the country and not for the industry!!! its about time we use our talent for our own good… not for the insults of future.

They need our pop songs.. from Atif Aslam to Annie to Roxen.. to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Strings, Azal, Mehdi Hassan, Nazia Hassan (late) and so many others i'm forgetting..

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

I cannot believe Abhijeet Sawant would make a ridiculous statement like that.. others I very much expected. Maybe it is the fear of getting less work with the better Pakistanis singers around. Hmph!

They always had issue's they might have nice playback singers..but they don't have a single pop-singer.. Abhijeet is plain insecure.. and why shudn't he be.. Atif Aslam, strings, jal, rahat they all can actually sing!

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

we know that they need our singers..... but will they ever accept that there is a weakness at their end... and they need us actually???

i think now our singers should stand up and say no we are not going... or will ever go......... these ppl first make them gods....... atif aslam ko kitna bara bana diya.... aab problem aai... tu saab ko zameen peh deh mara........ aur only old singers yaad reh gaye.... no one mentioned the new lot!!!

They won't admit that we're good and wanted.. that's how their minds work! While our people are busy in line waiting for tickets to "Yuvraaj" this was extremely sad.. Manmohan was on about Pakistan.. and Geo was showing a scroll "Yuvraaj released in cinema's all over Pakistan"..

Hats-off to JAL for refusing to tour India!

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

i know!!! i was so pissed off... yesterday there was a news on geo.... keh Pakistan main saab saye mashoor actress Katrina kaif hain!!!! my blood was boiling hot!!! there are special features on the movies.... why?>?? what for??? they are insulting Pakistan and Pakistanis with every breath they take.... aur hummare wale pagal ho rahye hain!!

why dont u guys do something?? you belong to the industry in a way... a many others on the forum..... why can't something be done to stop our channels to give publicity to these ppl??? can we get a petition or something???

I am shocked !! Why artists should be banned because of what their governement is doing ???

This is very pretentious …What do that means ? That India is greatest than Pakistan ? Worthy than Pakistan ? ?

I am disappointed in Abhijeet Sawant .. :frowning:

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

Yaar, now we are doing the same thing we don't want the Indians to do. What does Katrina or any movie star has to do with what their government is doing? Banning Indian movies will not be any different than Indians wanting to ban Pakistani bands and music there. If we expect Indians to be understanding and be fair, let's do the same also. IF they end up banning our musicians and prohibiting them from being in India then we should also take similar actions.. otherwise I don't think we should be hating on them.

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

but they are banning our artists........ they kicked out Zaheer abbas from saregamapa.... canceled all the projects....... why? if they are so fair... they should have kept it going!!

the thing is that... keh hummare artists naye apnaye aap ko boht sassta kardiya hai inkeh aagye... they talk BS about them.... aur koi faraq hi nahian parhta.... they still go and do shows and films... why what for?? apni value bana kar rakho na.....

it is not about tit for tat thing.... its more about self-respect.... and nation's respect....... ek taraf indians are insulting pakistan and pakistanis.... aur dosri taraf we are still promoting them...... and giving their news............ all those comments are not from govt but from celebs.... aur agar woh neutral nahian hain tu why do we have to be aman ka kabotar???/ why can't our celebs stay in pakistan?? why can't our news channels promote their own stuff.... yes we dont have films... but we have dramas.... huge ones... why can't our news channels give news about upcoming dramas??

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

Art shouldn't be "political", shouldn't bear any flag or be involved in this sorte of hate between two "brother Nations"... Art is a universal language which transcends the borders...

What a shame ! :( :(

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

hmmm.... but i think issaye muqa per .... we are pakistanis first and then artists or engineers or even doctors.......
Dr. Afia was only arrested coz she was doing first aid to a so called terrorist, and we also say that doctor have no religion and no nationality.....

so i strongly believe after all this... that all these baatain are good for school debates and fancy articles.... they dont work out in real life.........

as atif aslam said that india gives them the exposure and opportunity that pakistan does not. becharay artist kia karen.. at the end of the day, they are all out to make money and we all know bollywood has more influence and visibility around the globe that pakistan would ever have. who doesn't want to be famous.. and if atif was popular in pakistan, now the world loves him because of the music he has done in indian movies. same with junoon, getting banned in pakistan but being popular in india. bollywood is a much much bigger industry with more opportunies.. patriotism sab side mein rehjata hai when people see more popularity and money ;) and not just artist.. don't people from pakistan leave the country to come and settle abroad? just for the reason that they can have a better life here.

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

Adnan Sami jo itni mehnat saye indian howa tha… uss ko bhi nahian chur rahye…

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

^You're right.

the Indians have always been like this, they are very insecure when it comes to Pakistani artists. Pakistani artists on the other hand dont let any opportunity to waste when it comes to visiting india.
the indian media, government and to some extent the indian people hate us. and we Pakistanis should accept this fact, sooner the better. pakistanis should stop drooling over india and treat india as "just another neighboring country".

Re: Should Pakistani musicians be banned in India?

seriously! i agree!... many Pakistani artists stay say that they want to go to india... coz they are messengers of peace and love....... aab kisi ko izzat raas hi nahian aarahi.... kisi ko muhabbat samaj hi nahian aarahi tu why waste ur time and energy??? utni energy idhar apnaye mulq main phelao..... Pakistan itself is facing so much hatred... there are hate groups within pakistan..... why not sort out those with all the love and peace you have in yourself.....

btw.... that messenger wali baat was said by fasial qureshi and humayun saeed in good morning pakistan or ary..... they both are still going to india for their projects..... after all whats been happening!!!

See thats why I like Udit Narayaan better anyway. I didn't know what made udit better then kumar, and now I know. Kumar is a dumb ass.
