Re: Should Nawaz Sharif attend Narendra Modi's inauguration as India's Prime Minister

Or agree to disagree on core issues and tackle the ones where you can find common ground. There is trade, commerce, tourism, cricket/entertainment etc, where it is very easy to find an agreement. Complex issue like this can only be worked on in pieces. All the core issues have so much invested in them that it will be hard for either side to move away from their position without a severe backlash from their supporters.

So. Nawas Sharif was seated at the front row with Manmohan Singh who got up to greet the PM, followed by Modi - while on the stage - being the first one to lean forward and holding his hand in the air for good few moments to greet the PM with big smiles, little chit chat and enthusiastic shaking of his handshake. So much for just being an ordinary ceremonial guest who'd be clubbed together with Bhuttan, eh? LOL.

This has effectively turned out be quite a stately invite. From Nawas Sharif's receiving an all formal protocol at the airport to having post ceremony follow up meeting with Modi. But more importantly, both men are absolutely working the cameras and making their mamas' proud by acting like happy chappies.

The visit has produced significantly positive and possibly, some all time iconic images. We'll see.

:k: :lifey:

Hamid Karzia… all time Indian puppy raised voice against Pakistan… Pakistan was involved in militant attack at Indian Consulate Herat…

Re: Should Nawaz Sharif attend Narendra Modi's inauguration as India's Prime Minister

Allow that idiot man.

I'm more worried about our PM weight issues- he needs to hit the gym ASAP. This is not on.

Re: Should Nawaz Sharif attend Narendra Modi's inauguration as India's Prime Minister

deep sigh...

why are we so negative? just because some of us dont like naawaz sharrif does not mean we make fun of him all the time and call him ganja and declare this tour a failure...

ask your heart....you need to be honest with yourself......if IK was visiting india under similar circumstances, you really think he would have acted differently?.... we will bend over backward to defend Imran Khan's strange stand on taliban but will declare everything from nawaz sharif shameless and idiotic....what is this attitude..why cant we discuss issues on merit.

why were we expecting some major breakthrough in this tour? do you guys think there were camp david negotiations taking place? it was a 45 min conversation and that is it.

this tour was not pre-planned and there was no set agenda for any meaningful conversation. This tour was all about giving peace a chance and nothing else. Personal rapport between national leaders can go a long way towards good relations and good news are that these two gentlemen have started on a good note. Isn't that enough for a 48 hr tour?

honestly i am happy how elegantly our PM carried himself through out the visit. India media liked him and in general indian public admired him. What else do you want? why are you calling him names and insulting your own PM?

Lets see if Nawaz Sharif can deliver.

Nawaz’s Delhi trip: At courtesy call, India gives PM ‘show cause’**

NEW DELHI: ****On his first day in the job, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi pressed his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif for action against “terrorist groups” across the border, underlining sharp differences in both the style and approach of the leaders of Pakistan and India.
**
While Modi’s blunt warning to Islamabad amply showed that New Delhi wasn’t prepared to forget the past, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was looking at the future and appeared unwilling to drag old skeletons from the political cupboard, glossing over the irritants that have kept alive the tensions between the two neighbouring states.

In stark contrast to Modi, PM Nawaz Sharif spoke of burying the past and turning a new page during Tuesday’s historic meeting between the two leaders in New Delhi. His Delhi jaunt, in fact, was all about felicitating the new leader of India. There was no mention of the central issue of Kashmir, Siachen Glacier, Sir Creek, Wullar Barrage or even the water disputes involving the two neighbours. When PM Nawaz was preparing to fly out of the country, Indian officials did not accord him the same protocol that he had received upon his arrival, diplomats observed.

**Even though PM Nawaz did not meet with representatives of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference nor discussed Kashmir and instead focused on trade, his Indian counterpart insisted on talking about security.
**
PM Nawaz took no questions after the meeting and reading from a prepared text, he told the press, “I recalled to Prime Minister Modi my invitation to former prime minister Vajpayee. I intend to pick up the threads from the Lahore declaration …] PM Modi warmly reciprocated my sentiments and remarked that my visit to New Delhi was seen as a special gesture by the people of India.”

**However, Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh had a different version of the meeting. Briefing the Indian media, she said Modi conveyed India’s security concerns to premier Nawaz Sharif, especially issues of cross-border terrorism.
**
**“It was conveyed that Pakistan must abide by its commitment to prevent its territory and territory under its control from being used for terrorism against India,” she said. Pakistan was told that it needs to take effective measures to control terror, she maintained.
**
**According to Singh, Modi flagged the point that the probe into the 26/11 Mumbai attacks needed to be expedited. The pace of investigations was too slow, the Indian premier pointed out.
**
However, India did not clarify whether the issue of extradition of Dawood Ibrahim was raised or not. “We choose not to discuss it (with the media). These were confidential meetings,” the Indian foreign secretary said.

Minister’s call for debate on Article 370 kicks off controversy

NEW DELHI: Minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh on Tuesday triggered a controversy after he pitched for a debate on BJP’s stand demanding the repeal of Article 370 which guarantees special status for J&K.

Singh, BJP MP from Udhampur in J&K, argued that the debate would help convince the “unconvinced” that the article had actually worked more to J&K’s disadvantage.

The minister’s pitch came just after he took charge as MoS in the Prime Minister’s Office, and was in line with the stand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took while campaigning in J&K.

Singh’s statement sparked off an angry reaction from J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah, who suggested that the state would not be a part of India without Article 370. PDP too warned that fiddling with Article 370 could lead to anarchy in the state.

Abdullah took to Twitter to join issue with Singh. “So the MoS says process/discussions to revoke Article 370 have started… not sure who is talking… long after Modi government is a distant memory, either J&K won’t be part of India or Article 370 will still exist. Article 370 is the only constitutional link between J&K and rest of India… talk of revocation is not just ill-informed, it’s irresponsible,” he tweeted.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said irresponsible utterances on Article 370 should be stopped as they could have serious repercussions in J&K.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said, “Such talk of abolition of Article 370 will alienate people of Kashmir. This is a harmful step against the interests of the country.”

The government, however, did not appear to be upset with the MoS for sparking a debate a day after the inauguration of the Modi regime. “This issue was raised during the campaign. The minister comes from Jammu & Kashmir… if he has said something, the government will take a structured view on it,” law and justice minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Earlier, justifying his advocacy for a debate on the contentious article whose abrogation BJP has consistently demanded, Singh said, “The psychological barrier regarding repeal of Article 370 must be broken. A successful beginning has already been made… the large number of votes polled by BJP across Ladakh, Udhampur and Jammu, which cover a far wider area than the remaining three Valley constituencies, indicate the backing for the party’s position on J&K issues including abrogation of Article 370.”

He further said, “We will initiate a discussion with all stakeholders on the merits of abrogation of Article 370. We had smaller consultations with the youth of J&K even before the elections. We seem to have made them realize that the state has been more at a disadvantage on account of Article 370, and been deprived of the enormous benefits enjoyed by other states of the Union.”

The MoS emphasized that the framers of Constitution, including first PM Jawaharlal Nehru who was the biggest advocate for the special provision, had viewed Article 370 as “temporary and transitory”.

Modi Sarkaar looks in a hurry. Rulers in my country usually term their promises as ‘pre-poll rhetoric,’ unsuitable for practical purposes. I hope Modi will also use the same premise on the issue.
