Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

Discuss keeping in view:
child (girl) psychology, physical and emotional development stages during primary schooling and impact of head scarf on her whole primary school life.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

i personally don't believe that a girl should be obligated to wear the head scarf.
they're in primary school! and primary school, in canada, is up to grade 6. yes, there are some girls that develop faster than other girls - but i don't believe it's necessary.
if the girl chooses to do it out of her own free will, then hey, more power to you. but it shouldn't be forced, especially at such a young age.

we put so much emphasis on making sure that the head is covered that we neglect teaching our children other aspects of covering themselves...

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

Most of them have not hit puberty yet, so there is no reason to ask them to wear it...

At least I haven't seen 6 year olds with the hijab on.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

My cousins go to an Islamic school full time, even the kindergarten girs are asked to wear hijab. Grade 2 and up htey have to wear abayas, and I think they said starting 6th grade, they have to wear niqaab.

I’ve seen lil 2-3 year old girls wearing hijab..i duno if its cute or disturbing :bummer:

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

...........Discussion here is about main stream government/state primary schools....... not the Islamic/faith schools...The schools which have just 3 or 4 girls in head scarves and all majority of muslim girls without it....the schools which are dominated by western children.
In primary schooling a child's age would be mostly 5-12years.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

smack
it’s cute when it’s done on a once-in-a-while basis. like eid namaz or something.
liken making those little girls who are playing in the sandbox or painting on the easle wear hijabs..i think that’s just a little overboard.

and don’t even get me started on the abayas

 niqaab in grade six?! are you serious? this has got to be some tough-arse islamic school then.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

you didn't state what your opinion was?

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

.............I was quite upset when I have seen these girls in head scarves all passive and isolated .........because all other majority of muslim girls without H Scarves were more active in all aspects of school life.........and in these schools....majority of students are westerns and none muslim teacher there, all teachers are western.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

.........I am trying to form my opinion.........I need more discussion covering all aspects of a girl's life in primary school.........who is wearing head scarf in this setup of school.......where majority are not wearing

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

.........I think its not fair with that girl child who is just 5-12years old

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

I think that’s more to do with their own personality. I’ve known some hijabis who are scarily dominating and extroverted.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

........as matter of fact its being considered a hindrance .........girls dont know why they are wearing this as other muslim girls are not wearing.......and they dont seem happy by that burden on their head.......

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

This is a function of socializaiton. Within islamic socieites, is this really an issue? If it is, then why? And for the record, this is not about freedom to choose. This is about socially constructed dress codes and norms, and deviating from them.

The psycology will be effected by any racist attitudes exhibited toward the child. However, as a brown person growing up in TO during the rather racist 70's, I can attest to the fact that any difference (dress, skin color, nappy hair) can be a cause of stress for a child.

Seeking to eliminate any and all differences for the sake of 'fitting in' is not admirable, nor advisable.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

And how do you know that they are not happy? You are making assumption about what they would think, based on how you personally would feel in their position.

Everyone is distinct and is a product of their particular circumstances and environment. What one person is satisfied with makes another unhappy.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

*........these are not assumptions one girl told me......its just parents " I dont want to wear this ....my head gets hot".........:) *

One of primary teacher (my friend) she is daughter of a Imam masjid, she has been wearing headscarf but as started teaching in primary state school, stopped wearing that headscarf inside school while teaching to kids by saying " I dont want to Scare children, its ok its just 5-12 years old children". And she also thinks for primary girls its not obligatory.

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

I am not sure how 6% of France's population is already coping with it. I guess arguements for and against this so-called ban can be absurd depending on how you look at it. I guess it should be left to the pupil to decide what she wants to . If there's freedom of wearing torn jean to expose ur legs there shud be freedom of covering ur head too..

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

u shud tell her it doesnt matter if she's wearing it or not, its the intention, if theirs no intention, there is no use for it....not wearing it in front of prepubescent kids(and them wearing it) is alrite i suppose, but what about the other male teachers?

Re: Should Head Scarves be banned in Primary Schools?

.......male teachers ........ very rare commodity, most of the schools dont have any single male teacher, some have just 1 in UK.
