Learnt a few things from a wise guppie in another thread. It was my impression drugs were legal in the Netherlands. He pointed out only Marijuana in controlled amounts is.
After doing some limited web search, I got the impression that while it is illegal to do hard drugs in the Netherlands, their poilicy is still not to be punitive, but to help with addressing the problems - that is treatment.
Do you believe drug users should be locked up in jail or should they receive treatment? As a further step, should drug use be legalized where you live?
Re: Should drugs use be dealt as a crime in the country of your residence?
Portugal. They legalized drugs and poured money into rehab centers. Rates of street deaths and infections dropped dramatically. From a logical and economical point of view, it makes sense to legalize drugs. On the other hand, some people may be uncomfortable with the idea because in their mind, legalizing drugs is akin to the government endorsing drug use.
Re: Should drugs use be dealt as a crime in the country of your residence?
I think they should legalize it..coz I feel the problem is that it is illegal..so there is too much crime surrounding drugs coz it is a lucrative business..
I know there is a place in Vancouver which help out addicts..like they give them a safe environment to come and "shoot" themselves up!
Re: Should drugs use be dealt as a crime in the country of your residence?
OK - there appears to be a consensus building on legalization of drugs - an overwhelming 100% of respondents appear to be in favor of legalization. Wondering waht the moderators and channel managers of this forum feel about this issue.
Re: Should drugs use be dealt as a crime in the country of your residence?
Legalizing weed in America really would not make a difference outside of the economy. There would be limits for the legal age but regardless, minors would get a hold of it just like they are able to now.

The economic benefits are one of the main reasons I support legalizing it.
And once its legal, and sold in official outlets only.. the underground marijuana economy will be severely dented. The minors might still be able to get their hands on it, but it won't be as easy for them cuz the underground network of dealers won't be as spread and as prosperous as they are now.

Why cant the same logic be applied to other drugs also like heroin, coacaine etc?
Also, for the other drugs, if they remain illegal, would you support less of a punitive approach (locking up in jails) and more of preventative and treatment oriented approach?

heroin cocaine are wayyyyy tooo dangerous... marijuana is noway in the same category.
I think it sohuld be a mix of punitive and preventative, no 1 path will solve the problem independently..
Re: Should drugs use be dealt as a crime in the country of your residence?
1-Things are simple for us, any thing intoxicating is haram!!
2-You might want to look at history of the legislation against the drug, shamefully it was like which race was using what drug.

Lets also legalize killing for money too. those who do this business kill anyway, and people get killed. legalizing it will give some competition hence will bring the per-kill-charges a little lower, and also tax collection, good for economy. more killers will buy guns and amunition, even better for economy. also this will reduce corruption in the ccourts because there will be no murder cases. why not?

Legalize Marijuana.

Alcohol has more negative effects on society than Marijuana does.
A toke here and there doesn't hurt anyone.
Heroin, Cocaine, Meth, etc... They will F U up.
And I agree, a less punitive approach is the only way to go. You can't lock addicts up for shooting up.
I mean, how is that ever going to help them? I just can't comprehend the logic behind jail terms for drug use.
I sure as heck wish I could have gotten some medicinal marijuana for my parents when they were both battling cancer. The first round of chemo my mom went through nearly killed her.

Thanks folks - looks like the young generation has it right.
@ Monk - just wanted to make sure I understood your post.
"1-Things are simple for us, any thing intoxicating is haram!!

I assume you are saying that for item #1, there is over-simplification going on, whicih is not good?
For item 2, I think you are implying drug laws are unfair in terms of certain races being punished more than others for equivalent usage (cracked cocaine vs cocaine)
hope we het more views.
@aceones - may I safely assume you are against legalization :) ?
