I believe it’s nice to tip delivery men, but I don’t quite understand if there’s really a need for it. I’m talking food delivery. It’s usually pizza delivery and they usually charge you for it. I know Pizza Hut charges me $2 and another desi place charges me about the same amount. Popeyes requires that I order food over a certain limit, plus the extra $2 for delivery.
I understand if I’m dining in, then there’s more of a reason to tip the waiter/waitress. Although I’m aware they do get paid for working there, but it’s still acceptable I suppose.
Whereas, tipping someone for delivery when I’ve already paid for delivery doesn’t make sense, unless it could somehow be explained why there may be a need for it.
Yes, if the delivery service charge is there, you are not expected to tip but its nice to give something because most delivery guys are making minimum wage and you know, at their income level every bit counts.
Usually in American restaurants you get paid by the hour only if you are not making the minimum. So, your neighbourhood Applebees servers probably make $2 an hour but they have to report all the tips (contrary to common belief tips are taxed) and then the manager decides if you are making below minimum to give you more than $2/hr to make it up.
Lastly, most desi restaurant I have been to, don't let their servers keep the tip they earn. Thats why the service is so bad. If you would like to give tip at a desi restaurant, give it in cash ... maybe the server will slip it in his pocket or something.
ahmadjee, is it even legal to pay an employee $2/hr? I thought you gotta be paying minimum wage + the tips.
I remember once I ordered pizza and paid the usual $2 for delivery, which was charged on the bill. Upon delivery I gave the man a few bills and some change, so that I'd get a toonie back. He started to walk away and I sort of had to stop and ask him for it. In response I got "I thought the remainder is the tip."
Thank you for bringing up the fact that desi eateries might not be tipping their delivery staff. However, if I'm already paying $2 for delivery, which gets charged on the bill, is there really a need then to pay extra?
As a student I'm usually on a tight budget and when I order food, I don't always tip unless I have extra cash lying around or in a generous mood. I sort of feel guilty, but then I pay for delivery anyway.
Though they get paid for it but even the employeer recognizes tips hence offer little to no basic pay. Besides, mostly its negligible amout so why not tip..
It's awkward sometimes, like this Punjabi guy we know owns a take away, mint food, I always order from his place but sometimes he delivers himself and he's a rich bussiness man so I feel a bit awkward tipping him, I thinks to myself "he owns the place, he's in no need of it."
If it's just a delivery boy, they always get tips, sometimes £5 if I can't be bothered to wait for the change, however if it's someone I know like a mate I tell them to fcuk off!
In canada ... tip is part of the wage. most of their wage is the TIP. Food delivery ya, give 'em somefin.
Courier delivery ... no - they are on salary.
At the minimum they should be. But at the maximum, they can make whatever tips they get. That is why servers are all so nice … thats how they earn their living.
i didn’t know that, and i couldn’t believe this, ahmadjee, so i read up on it, and i found out that federal minimum for tipped employees is 2.13 and new york state min is 4 bucks and change. that’s tough.
lately i’ve noticed that some of the restaurants i go to regularly have changed their policy, they’ve started including a 15% gratuity in the check. so then what, do you still pass a buck or two to the servers, or it’s not needed? i don’t wanna piss off the ppl bringing my food to me
i do it regardless, i’m just nice
