Shoaib Akhtar: a medical marvel

Shoaib Akhtar: a medical marvel
Wisden Cricinfo staff - June 16, 2003

In an exclusive interview with London’s Guardian newspaper, Shoaib Akhtar talked in detail about the controversy surrounding his bowling action, and the medical problems resulting from the much-publicised hyperextension to his joints which is at the heart of doubts over his action.

In April 2002, Shoaib’s action was scrutinised by the human-performance department at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Angered by a ban slapped on him by the International Cricket Council for throwing, Shoaib went to Australia to try to clear his name, a decision that was vindicated when the experts confirmed that his arm was straight at the point of delivery.

“In a way they [the Perth doctors] were so pissed off with me,” he told the Guardian. “They freaked out. ‘How can you be the fastest bowler in the world? You are just pathetically abnormal.’ They measured each single thing about me. They discovered that, where a normal person’s joints move about 20%, maximum, my elbow can move 42%. Same with all my joints. It’s not nice to have all this, it is why I have had so many injuries. I have hyper-tension in my wrists, my knees, everywhere.”

As if his resemblance to a bendy toy wasn’t enough of a handicap, Shoaib went on to explain that he also suffers from flat feet. “Flat, completely,” he explained.. “Every time I’m in England I go to Birmingham to get special boots made. I always see a couple of doctors when I buy them and get everything measured properly. Have to. See, I’m not normal. I couldn’t walk when I was five. My mum will tell you.”

Given his physical defects it was amazing that he played cricket at all. He was a late starter, not even taking part in a game until he was 15. “My brother was captain of the local club,” he said. “I went to watch him play and they were a guy short. I said: ‘I’ll play.’ My brother laughed: ‘You?’ But the others persuaded him. I think everyone was quite impressed when I came on to bowl.”

And he added that had he been born Australian, then his career record would have been even more impressive. “With [Glenn] McGrath and [Jason] Gillespie softening them up, then I come on, I’d have got more wickets than anyone ever. Because when I play for Pakistan, with Wasim [Akram] and Waqar [Younis] they are in decline. They were great but they’re not matchwinning bowlers any more. So I have to make it all happen on my own. There is so much expectation on my shoulders.”

Just when u think that Akhter is going to change coz of added responsibility of a leading fast bowler, he comes up with crap like this. WHAT AN IDIOT!!!!

i agree coolbreeze i have also followed waqar's career and nevr ever he said any thing like that.its just the way WE ALL treated him, after ATC test match at calcutta, has gone into his mind.

throw this SOB out right now. I honestly can't believe he said that. He does not realize how close his "pathetically abnormal" self was close to greatness. McGrath and Gillepsie can die and come back 10 times and won't be half as good as the Ws.

McGrath and Wasim?? How can a comparison be even made? And Gillpesie? Well let him get his wickets over 200 in either form of the game and we'll talk.

I was almost forgave this guy for the **** that he did in WC but now I doubt if any Pak fan will have too much respect for him.

Dear Sambrilian! too me there is alot boyond last WC where shoaib is questionable. but i dont think people in pak are going to change their opinion about akhter too much. akhter's head is in the sky since that calcutta test match. to me the problem is boyond shoaib akhter, the real problem is the way Pakistani poeple have started to take cricket in last 8 years. (i'll be putting up a new thread on that, i just need some time to put it together.)

He sounds as if he has had some problems in that department. “Imagine if I was playing for Australia,” he says, as if in confirmation. “With [Glenn] McGrath and [Jason] Gillespie softening them up, then I come on, I’d have got more wickets than anyone ever, mate. Because when I play for Pakistan, with Wasim [Akram] and Waqar [Younis] they are in decline. They were great but they’re not match-winning bowlers any more. Wasim has not won a match since 1996. So I have to make it all happen on my own. There is so much expectation on my shoulders. But, if I come on after those two [Australians], when the ball’s a bit older and swinging. Imagine, it would be ‘see you, mate, talk to you later’ every time.”

Particularly that means England this week. But does all this Aussie-philia mean he will be heading over there permanently as soon as he can?** “No way, man, there’s only one place I want to live,” he says, grinning his wide, affable smile. “Here. Man, it was 51 degrees when we left Lahore. When the plane touched down in Scotland it was six degrees. Bliss. The cold, the rain, I love it.” **Interview: Shoaib Akhtar

So he's making a few dumbass comments, what's new? The bottom line is whether he produces on the pitch and to be fair, he's been bowling well since he came back into the team. In his last match before he got banned he fairly ripped into the NZe'rs, and he's bowled well on the tour so far as well.

Well first of all, if its true, then its shame of a comment (the last para i mean) But English media is famous for his cooked-up stories. And Shoaib as cited by Ramiz and Haroon Rashid has been banned from any interview whatsoever.

Lets see...

Yeah I really don't care what he says anymore as long he keeps on taking wicketes.

Mind you Wasim Akram is still a match winner, I think he forgot 2nd one dayer in Super Challenge when he ripped the Aussies top order apart.

Wasim to this day is alot dangerous bowler then Shoaib.

I think , he forgot what waqar did in the last tour to england,
or wasim did so many times, even when Shoaib was in the team or not..
this crap is not even half close to the perfection and supremacy with the ball of those TWO legends, and he is saying such words to them..
I can bet, if waqar or wasim is given the ball in England these days, they can still do magic better than him...
and then he will bring more crap after there performance.....
duh

me agreeing too swayer brother.

But why not you typing in Urdu..

easy writing for you and easy understanding for us.
No problemo.everybodys happy happy.

While I agree with that some of Shaoib's comments are retarded, you guys should check out the full interview on the Gaurdian website rather than the cut down version. The full one does'nt seem quite as bad when you include the context of what he is talking about.
Anyways, everybody already knows he is'nt the sharpest guy in the world and that he has a big mouth, but as long as he gets wickets what do we care what he says,,,,,,,,,,

actually I've had it with him. I don't mind losing a couple of series or tournaments if it means the end of Akhtar's career.

He indeed is a medical miracle: the man without a brain plays cricket.

Is that why he resorted to 'doctoring' the ball, and was caught - twice!! ?.
