Shirt length - help

So I got my wedding outfit back and lo and behold…there is something wrong with it!! The shirt length is shorter than I had expressly stated, despite the fact that I told the lady many many many times that it needed to be long enough to touch the border on the skirt so it looks more consistent. She was adamant that it was long enough and any longer and it would be touching the floor (it’s nowhere near touching the damn floor).

The shirt is short by around 5-6 inches which is pretty substantial. The lady isn’t admitting fault, but that is a separate issue and in the next few days if this doesn’t get sorted out I’ll be opening a whole new thread revealing all because I don’t want any other bride-to-be going through the same hassle as me.

Anyways, regarding the shirt - what can I do with it (if anything at all)?

Re: Shirt length - help

2 options - leave it as it is or add more material to the bottom to make it longer.

Re: Shirt length - help

^ It already has a border, so I'm not sure more material will do anything for it.

Re: Shirt length - help

Can you try it on and see what it looks like? It may look better on you.

Re: Shirt length - help

Well I have tried it on and shown pictures to my cousins - they think it looks good, but I really don't like it and I don't feel good in it either. It's totally not what I envisaged. It just looks cheap. :(

Shirt length - help

Add some hanging lace!

Re: Shirt length - help

hrm, my cousin went through the exact same scenario, except it was her lehenga that was 6" too short! she's a tall girl and it was a complete disaster but her mum ended up buying a sari in a similar colour and having that added to the bottom to form a kind of pattern all on its own. you couldn't tell it was an add-on AT ALL. the whole outfit was gorgeous!

so even though it has a border, try adding in a second one and see how it looks. if you use big stitches to loosely add it on yourself first, you'll be able to get an idea. the border could be a contrast or a similar colour as the top one but a different, maybe patterened fabric?

i'm sorry :/ it sucks that it didn't come out the way you had planned.

Re: Shirt length - help

Didn't you give measurements when placing order (as in inches - instead of saying it should be long enough to touch the border on the skirt?) I think to avoid confusion its best to provide measurements that way but anyway, what's done is done.

An additional border seems to be the only option if you want to extend the length of the shirt and depending on the type of work you have you on your existing border, you can use two strips of 3 inch work or a 2 inch with a four inch. If your existing border is a sort of repeat pattern then get additional fabric patched and get similar kaam done on that. If you can post the picture of the border only, some one here must be able to suggest you some options.

Re: Shirt length - help

you can perhaps add another chattapatti border with colours matching your dress.

Re: Shirt length - help

example of chattapatti border

hope this helps you.

Re: Shirt length - help

I was at Fine Fabrics on Albion Road this past weekend and saw some really nice quality borders that might work......you can visit them if you want to consider this option.

Re: Shirt length - help

TONOM - I'm not sure hanging lace will look good with the look I want to go for. But thank you for the suggestion anyway.

SGC - I'm glad your aunt saved the day. I just hope someone comes to my rescue also. I'm thinking of getting an extra border because that seems to be my only option.

Eastern Dresses - the lady was the one who took my measurements. She was really insistent that the length I wanted was long enough and she said that any longer and it will be dragging on the floor. And yes, she wrote down the measurements in inches. If she had told me she was inadequate at measuring, I would've gone elsewhere.

Sammii - Thank you for the link. I'll have to get something like that.

Muzna - Thanks, but I'm in the UK, and I've yet to see any decent borders. I'm thinking of visiting a local designer boutique to see if she can do anything.

It just totally sucks that you ask for one thing and get something completely different!! ARGH!!!!

Re: Shirt length - help

u may add another sleevless inner under ur shirt which touches the floor.with a new border below it.

Re: Shirt length - help

Based on the comment by unknownn I take my words back that additional border seems to be the only option. Adding an under-shirt with the border might actually work better. That can be the new trend as well =)
