Anyone take part in this?
utd I have some shia pals and family members and not one of them has ever engaged in this. I have seen this happening though. what some shias do is hit themselves in mourning..slapping and punching their own chests in mourning. Many dont even do that.
I will not say that the hitting oneself is very uncommon from what I have seen, but the cutting and chains and all is a much smaller number of people, not small enough for me to say its irrelevant, but still a rather small percentage of shias do that.
I have a very close friend who is a Shia.
Last year he showed me a home video which he took at a gathering in Green Street, East Ham London where a lot of the Shias gather during the 10th Muharram.
I must admit that this was the first time I actually witnessed this event and my mouth just dropped open.
A lot of the people were just slapping their chests with their bare hands in rythm may I add, but a handful had the blades.
When I say they started to go some, I mean they started to go some. Young and old.
Their were some who were mildly cut, but then their were some who had severe cuts which no doubt required serious hospital treatment.
Even my friend was surprised with the self mutilation and admitted that he doubts if he will ever go to that extreme.
Once I was about 10 yrs old, i went down to Androon Sheer Mocchi Gate in Lahore. Apparaently there the procession starts i.e.
They beieve the horse somehow belongz to the family of horses onto which Hazrat Imam Hussain R.A were on. Now the horse then makes its way through the tight galyaaan of LAhore. Infront of the Horse you have these men as Sholey said , torturing themselves in a ryhtmic fashion, hitting themselves and saying YAA Hussain Yaa Hussain. The procession ususally end up near Gammaey Shah, near Hazrat Data Ganj bukhs Mazar.
Then I saw some pple going to the horse and collecting the saliva and then they add it in there food they give out !!!!.

Self flagellation espescially with swords chains etc is not encouraged. It isn't a religious requirement and I do think people who participate in zanjeer zani and this sort of thing go over the top.

they can atleast give some blood donation instead cutting thier skull
to waste their blood it could save some lives.
i saw this picture of a guy cutting his lil sons head with a sword and the poor kid is probably about 1/2 yrs old and he's there crying and bleeding like hell. I felt so angry..ok they can do it to themsleves but to a little kid that is way too much.
I went to highschool with a lot of shias, and during Muharam they used to come to school with scars. There are a lot of shais near where I live and during Muharam, they would stay up all night at some place and cry and cry and cry.
