Not entirely unexpected, but she should be given credit for at least trying to change this stupid law.

A Pakistani MP has abandoned her attempt to change the country’s controversial blasphemy laws.
Sherry Rehman has been forced to scrap her campaign to amend Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, after the government ruled out any change.
The former information minister had proposed a private member’s bill in parliament seeking to soften the blasphemy law.
The proposal to remove the death penalty for blasphemy triggered large demonstrations in several cities across Pakistan.
Punjab governor Salman Taseer was killed by one of his own bodyguards last month for supporting the changes.
Mr Taseer was an outspoken critic of Islamic extremism and had spoken out about the imposition of the death penalty.
US-based group Human Rights Watch is demanding the release of a 17-year-old boy arrested in Karachi for writing an allegedly blasphemous essay in a high school exam.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

shami not law but some people brain is stupid

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

So her own party (the Govt) abandoned her on this...

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

If IK had back-tracked like that everyone would start jumping up and down here :D

lekin Zardari, Altaf ya Sherry Rehman karey to theek hai

I don't blame Sherry though, infact supported her stand on blasphemy

But I guess after Taseer's murder she really had no choice but to abandon the bill

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

"if" IK had backtracked Reverse Swing? PPP stopped support for the bill after its clear nobody else will touch it, Imran Khan sent his representative to the blasphemy rally!! "if" indeed. its one thing to back out, its another to go over to the other side.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

Cowards.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

Our gem Rahman Malik of the PPP (whose also the interior minister) also said to the media how he'd shoot a blasphemer on sight...

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

yeap true. along with Baber Awan who was also making similar noises. But atleast PPP is the only one that has some prominent people taking bold, public stands on this.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

IK's stand is clear. The law should not be abolished but merely reviewed in order to prevent it's misuse. Musharraf is saying the same thing. Even if some PTI members decided to join an anti-blasphemy rally fine. It does n't mean IK has changed his stance or that he specifically asked them to do so. Even workers belonging to the same party can have disagreements on a few issues.....IK does not have to agree with all of his party members and workers on every single point and vice versa

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

I quote from the other thread:

The first to speak is the PTI man.** He says on behalf of Imran Khan (“Imran Khan ki taraf se…”) that the **PTI will not tolerate any amendment to the blasphemy laws.

Either a senior party leader is misquoting Imran Khan, in a public rally, reported in national media without any clarification from Imran Khan (indicating inept leadership) or hes talking out of both sides of his mouth again (more likely).

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

I miss that ugly old fart, where has he been these days? Is he still lurking on facebook?

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

I have heard this over and over, on Pakistani news channels, from all the mullahs and other supporters of the law. But that's just double-speak. How can you do anything about it when the first things mullahs do, upon any talk of amendments to the law, is to bring the country to a standstill and threaten people?

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

^ not just the Mullahs, but assorted pseudo Mullah courtesans like PML(all variants) and PTI.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

Then PPP are a bunch of Mollah courtesans too... They are democratically elected, so I guess the majority in Pakistan holds the view. And honestly, I was in Pakistan vacationing right before Taseer was shot. Everyone on the streets had a negative view about what he was trying to do (not to mention he wasnt a popular person to begin with), even workers from his own party.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

you cant equate PPP as a group not backing Taseer with sending representatives to speak at Namoos rally. there have been several prominent voices who have backed taseer (Sherry, Bilawal come to mind) on this issue, and PPP is the only party who even have the issue of party backs or not.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

lol

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

you may lol, but sadly they are the few in our political discourse to risk emerging from the mulla's court.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

Really? wow, some fart he is.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

The lol was for you, claiming the PPP had those people, citing those two... And yeah, what you said is true, very few, and its the ppp as well.. Sherry and Prince Harry dont count.

Re: Sherry Rehmanabandons opposition to blasphemy law

lol when hes about to cover up for something he says the most ridiculous things... remember the plane crashing head on with a hill and he somehow came out with 5-10 survivors lol... and then the 'there is noo blak-vaaater in pakistan'...
