Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

**Pakistani journalist and daughter of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, Shehrbano Taseer, received a Human Rights Award during an annual award dinner in New York City on Saturday.

**In the months since her father’s slaying, Shehrbano has continued to speak out publicly against discriminatory laws that target religious minorities and encourage extremism, said a press release issued by Human Rights First.
Despite criticism and even death threats from militant groups, Shehrbano has worked unremittingly to shed light on the hundreds of victims of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and to encourage the government to take necessary steps to promote religious tolerance, the press release added.

Human Rights First will honour Shehrbano “for her courage in carrying out her father’s legacy of religious tolerance.” She has published a series of op-ed pieces calling for change in Pakistan, and has openly criticised those who glorify her father’s murderer, said the press release.

She was instrumental in the United Nations Human Rights Council’s groundbreaking resolution in Geneva this March that seeks to address violence, discrimination, and incitement to religious hatred without the controversial notion of **“defamation of religions,” the statement said, adding that her courage has led some to characterise the young journalist as “one of the bravest women in today’s Pakistan”.

Congratz Shehrbano, you are definetly one of the brave young journalist we have in our country!
and may your family finds peace soon … InshaAllah!

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

What about Edhi Sahib?

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

I am sure he has received awards for his service as well, but look at the subtext of the reasons for the award. That is unless you disagree with what she is doing.

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

^what is she doing? putting her family in danger?

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

and why don't these Westerners honour their antiwar activists with such awards?

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

And I can turn around and ask that why didn't Pakistan honor abdus salam or treat APJ Kalam better so that he wouldn't have had gone back to India? Noam Chomsky got famous in america first before anywhere else and I think he has received awards from some groups.

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

Not sure what the debate is about between the H lady and you ...

As an admirer of Chmosky's work, I have to note that Chomsky does not give any interview to US media - so I dont think US govt honored him.

Back to this thread - congratulations to the lady who won the award - cant understand the naysayers' point here,

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

She's nice looking, that's about all

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

so you want her to act coward and stop speaking against injustice?
its takes courage to stand against injustice and speak truth.if they wanted they couldve easily left the country after their fathers murder, but they chose to stay in Pakistan and fight!, not everyone can do that!!

it seems like u dont know much abt this lady, listen to her interviews .. youll def salute her courage.

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

i guess i shouldve posted this thread in PA ... mods can move it there. Thank You

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

Errr Excuse me, but which Injustice? The one we being Muslims stand together for, as a command in our religion. If we call this: (the punishment for blasphemy) an extreme act, we are actually confusing our religious faith and norms or are not aquainted with it in the veyr first place, like her father, who called this “a black law”. Doh. A muslim, calling a law proscribed by Islam as a black law and his daughter propagating it. Well West can even make a statue of her and start idolizing it. They have done much for the Gustakh e Rasool (SAW) Salman Rushdi as well. Does that matter?

I would detest and prefer to die of shame if such an award is given to this bibi from “Islamic Republic of Pakistan” as well. That would have been a death sentence for our creed as a nation.

As regards the last part of your post; we not knowing much about the lady, well, she is a pakistani right? And I assume you are an Indian, having a perspective poles apart from ours, so how can you even relate to all this and feel like passing a remark? You want to salute her, go ahead, our villians tend to be the heroes of those who are not our friends.

“In the months since her father’s slaying, Shehrbano has continued to speak out publicly against discriminatory laws that target religious minorities and encourage extremism, said a press release issued by Human Rights First.”**

Needless to repeat, but if it is this for which she has been awarded, calling the law of shariah as discriminatory and extremism, I can only feel pity for her and make dua she is shown the Sirat al Mustaqeem by Allah Subhan Wa Taala.

P.S: It is not written in the rights of minorities anywhere in the world, not even in the Generous West or Secular whatever, to insult anothers’ religion and pass blasphemous remarks. Now whatever the punishment of whatever be, in the other parts of the world, we, being Muslims will always follow the command of our religion in such regards. Why should we get confused and start to call it black law or red law or white law, whatever.

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

Instances of intolerance and extremism alive and well can be found everywhere. Whats more important is a mutual respect for each others' feelings and perspectives as nations and neighbouring countries. And on this, just as it looks like, unfortunately, we will never be on the same page, OR, if nothing much else, you people wont be favoring and appreciating the lady who is only vocalizing the same ideas which may please those who could never understand Islam as a religion of Peace and sanctity, and always remained biased, the ideas that hurt all the nation when expressed by our Governor and the ideas which unfortunately brought him to grave, with very little sympathy for that individual since however you all, and even the world laws and justice may call it wrong and extremism, we can never compromise on the honor of your religion and our last prophet Sal Allah O Aleh Wasalam.

Look at this thread only, aint all those paying salutes to the lady are only those who would themselves condemn and would never understand the logic of the law of blasphemy, the same people whose heroes are our villains and vice versa. So have the feelings, the mentality over the borders really changed even after the lapse of centuries? And we thought we have come out of that age of bias and prejudice!

Re: Shehrbano Taseer receives human rights award

She can't even read or write Urdu. Her articles and interviews are for Pakistani elitists and New York's human right goras only.

I wonder what her SIL has to say about her "courage"?

What her father did was wrong, he had a point but he lost it after speaking without any wisdom and she's just fueling to the fire without thinking about majority of Pakistanis' sentiments.
