:)....I know No One will believe this..............but I think there is a connection between Syria..Shaam and these kabaabs.........you will say how is that?
I had friends who were from Syria i.e. Shaam....this Family once invited us for dinner and they had what looked exactly like and tasted like shaami kabaabs..........
So I asked what were they called...........
My Syrian Friend said they are called Kabaab Hindi............:biggthumb
No I said these are called Shaami Kabaabs............
So there you have it........we people from Hind call these kabaabs Shaami and the peoples of Shaam call them Kabaab Hindi........:)
Who knows who named them first us or them?

Re: shami in the kebabs?
:snooty:
here is what wiki says, so I was right in post 10
The origin of the name of the dish is a mystery. Shami Kabab literally means Syrian Kabab in Arabic. Some are of the opinion that these kebabs were introduced to India during the Mughal era by Muslim emigrants from the Middle East. They had employed cooks from all over the Muslim world to serve in the royal kitchens. Some of the cooks were from Syria as well. The Sham refers to either Syria specifically or the Levant in general, and these kebabs literally means Syrian kebabs or Levantine kebabs in Arabic.

I bet thats how they come up with shahi tokrayz. Maybe some Italian/English officer must've presented the Sultan e alam, with a loaf of bread. Prolly that was given to bawarchi, upon which the bawarchi must've wiggled his wiskers in disaproval that what bay-mazah thing. So he made shahi tokrayz from it like Ras malai? What u think peeps?
Re: shami in the kebabs?
Shahi Tukhray came when the bawarchi accidentally dropped some slices of bread inside the pot of milk ...
Re: shami in the kebabs?
^where did the bread come from? erm…actually who taught him to make it ![]()
daring u not to go to ur beloved wiki for source…
Re: shami in the kebabs?
SindSagar's suggestion makes more sense.. as kebabs are from Arabs... so shami kebeb from syria.
