Liaqat: Pakistan’s first Prime Minister
Liaqat Ali Khan’s grandfather Nawab Ahmad Ali Khan of Karnal gave full support to the British army during the Indian revolt of 1857. The family was duly rewarded by the British- 300 villages in total including the “jagir” of 60 villages in Karnal expanded across both Eastern Punjab and the United Provinces. Liaqat’s father Nawab Rustam Ali Khan, possessed the titles of Rukun-al-Daulah,Shamsher Jang and Nawab Bahadur, bestowed upon him by the British Government.
After he completed his bachelor’s in Political Science and Law from Aligarh Muslim University, he went to Oxford University’s Exeter College on a grant/scholarship awarded by the British Government where he obtained a master degree in Law.He joined the Muslim League in 1923 and in early thirties he along with his second wife Raana Liaqat Ali Khan went to England and started working there. Jinnah at that time was already there. In mid thirties Jinnah and Liaqat returned to India where Jinnah proposed him as the secretary general of the Muslim League,an office he retained till 15 August 1947.
On Partition, Liaqat who had no constituency in Pakistan was nominated by Jinnah as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.And when his economic planning failed in late 40’s he focused on the United States’ aid program. Nehru on the other hand focused on socialism and went on to be a part of Non Aligned Movement.
In 1949 after Jinnah’s death, Liaqat intensified his vision to establish the Islamic system in the country, presenting the Objectives Resolution— a prelude to future constitutions, in the Constituent Assembly. It was hurriedly passed on 12 March 1949. But it met with harsh criticism from minority members even from Law Minister Jogendra Nath Mandal who argued against it. So it was Liaqat who promoted right wing forces while mixing up religion with politics- a blunder due to which we are still suffering after 70 years.
Liaquat also restrained from writing down the constitution, as he feared that the Bengali demographic majority would be granted political power and he would lose the prime minister’s office. In 1949, Soviet Union under its leader Joseph Stalin sent an invitation to Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan to visit the country, followed by the U.S. invitation after learning the Soviet move. In May 1950, he paid a state visit to the United States after being persuaded to snap ties with the Soviet Union, and set the course of Pakistan’s foreign policy towards closer ties with the West.
In 1947–48 Liaqat-Jinnah relations was contentious, and the senior military leadership and Jinnah himself became critic of his government. In his last months, Jinnah came to realize that he was a weak prime minister—highly ambitious— and was not loyal to Jinnah and his vision in his dying days.
Differences and problems also leveled up with Pakistan Armed Forces, and a section of Pakistan Army became hostile towards Liaqat’s diplomatic approach with India. The existence of high level opposition was revealed in Rawalpindi conspiracy, sponsored by Chief of General Staff Major-General Akbar Khan, and headed by communist leader Faiz Ahmad Faiz.
On 16 October 1951, Liaqat was shot twice and killed during a public meeting at Company Bagh,Rawalpindi.
All traces of the murder scene were immediately removed and the murderer was shot dead on the spot.Later,a plane carrying the inquiry file of the murder mysteriously crashed near Gujaranwala.

گزشتہ دنوں ایبٹ آباد میں ایک تاریخی شخصیت 106 سال کی عمر میں وفات پا گئیں۔ آپ کو جان کر حیرت ہو گی کہ وہ کون سی شخصیت تھی جو گمنام رہی۔ تو وہ اس سید اکبر کی بیوی تھی جس نے 1951 میں ہمارے پہلے پی ایم لیاقت علی خان کا لیاقت باغ میں قتل کیا تھا۔
اس سید اکبر کو تو موقع پر ہی پکڑنے کی بجائے قتل کیا گیا تھا۔مگر اس کے چار بیٹوں اور بیوہ کو ایبٹ آباد کنج قدیم میں ایک گھر آلاٹ کیا گیا اور سخت پہرے میں اس وقت کی جدید ترین سہولیات بھی مہیا کی گئی تھیں۔ اس کا بڑا بیٹا دلاور خان جو اس وقت 8 سال کا تھا آج بھی 85 سال کی عمر میں زندہ سلامت اپنے ذاتی بہت بڑے گھر میں شملہ ہل بانڈہ املوک میں رہائش پزیر ہے ۔کیونکہ جو گھر ان کو اور اس کی ماں کو آلاٹ کیا گیا تھا وہ بیوہ کے نام پہ تھا اور ان کا بچپن وہاں گزرا.
اسی دوران پہرہ دینے والے سپاہی سے ان کی ماں نے شادی کر لی اور اس کے ہاں 5 بچے یعنی چار بیٹے اور ایک بیٹی کی مزید پیدائش ہوئی، 8 بھائی اور ایک بہن والا کنبہ نہایت خوشحال زندگی گزارتا رہا۔
بالآخر دلاور خان کی شادی بھی اس کے دوسرے پاکستانی والد بدل زمان خان نے اپنی رشتہ دار سے کروائی جو سات بچوں یعنی چار بیٹوں اور تین بیٹیوں کی ماں ہے ،سید اکبر کے باقی تین بیٹے یکے بعد دیگرے امریکہ میں سیٹل کر دیئے گئے۔
دلاور خان شادی کے کچھ عرصہ بعد کابل گیا، بقول اس کےاپنی آبائی زمینیں دیکھنے ۔اور اپنی بیوی اور ایک ہی بیٹا جو اس وقت تھا اس کو ماں کے پاس چھوڑ رکھا تھا۔ 8 سال بعد واپس آیا اور بیوی بچے کو بھی لے گیا۔ مگر کچھ عرصہ آنا جانا کرتا رہا اور بالآخر پچھلے 50 سال سے مستقل اپنے ذاتی گھر میں مقیم ہے۔ الاٹ ہوا گھر ماں نے فروخت کر دیا ۔اور دوسرے خاوند کے بچوں کے ساتھ نئے بنگلوں میں رہائش پزیر تھی اور بالآخر دنیا سے رخصت ہوگئی۔
امید ہے آپ لوگوں کو اس پی ایم کے قتل کے بارے کچھ تو سمجھ آئی ہو گی۔
