Shafilea

This is so sad. :bummer: I can’t believe this kind of thing is still happening.

**Five arrested over Shafilea death

Police investigating the murder of Warrington teenager Shafilea Ahmed have arrested five of her close relatives. **

The men and women were arrested in Bradford on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

The body of the 17-year-old, who had rejected an arranged marriage, was found in the Lake District in February.

Detectives have not ruled out her parents being involved in her death, although they are not among the relatives arrested on Tuesday.

Shafilea’s parents, Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed, were arrested in December 2003 on suspicion of kidnap before being released from police bail in June.

The couple have denied any involvement in her death.

Detective Chief Inspector Geraint Jones, who is leading the Cheshire Police investigation into her death, said he had visited the couple to inform them of the arrests and was keeping them updated on developments.

But he said he had not ruled out the possibility that they were involved.

Shafilea went missing from her home in Liverpool Road, Great Sankey, on 11 September 2003, shortly after arriving home from a family holiday in Pakistan.

While there, she had drunk bleach in a possible attempt to avoid the marriage which had been arranged for her, resulting in her needing frequent medical attention for injuries to her throat and stomach.
Police believe it was this refusal of an arranged marriage which may have led to her being murdered to avenge her family’s “honour”.

Her body was pulled out of the River Kent, at Sedgewick, in Cumbria, in February and was identified by DNA tests and jewellery belonging to her which was found at the scene.

A post-mortem examination failed to provide conclusive evidence of how she died.

After her death, poems found in Shafilea’s bedroom in which she wrote of her unhappiness and “feeling trapped” were released by police.

Mr Jones said of those arrested: "They are close family members, but not Shafilea’s parents. They are very close relatives.

**‘Open inquiry’ **

"All they are being questioned about is the alleged lies that they have said. "

Mr Jones rejected suggestions that the police investigation was stereotyping the Asian community by focusing on her family.

He said: "The investigation has always been an open inquiry.

"We have conducted numerous inquiries and spoken to a lot of people, but we can’t ignore the fact that Shafilea may have been killed because she didn’t conform.

“That has always been and always will be part of the investigation.”

Those arrested are a woman in her 20s, a man in his early 30s, two men in their late 30s and one man in his 60s.

They will be questioned in Cheshire later on Tuesday.

Such a tragedy.

When will thick headed people stop trying to force such marriages.

u better not come back to uk

These days even 25 year olds aren;t ready for marriage and their shoving it down a 17 year old's throat!

I'm really pleased about the way the police have worked on this case ... it would have been easy for them to brush it under the carpet as 'another honour killing', but they've never given up on bringing the killers to justice. If only the family were as helpful ...

i think i read about her and her poems last year sometime... didnt someone post her poems in a thread? really really sad...

im glad the police have brought some justice to her death...

I hope those responsible face not only justice through the courts, but also the FULL WRATH of Allah SWT!

Allah maray in edited ko!

Re: Shafilea

The story was back under the spotlight yesterday because her parents have been charged with her murder.

Re: Shafilea

Sad…yet another example of Asian parents who believe their kids are their property.. Unfortunately, this is too common.

Re: Shafilea

Uneducated parents and dumb kids a natural but BAD combination.

Re: Shafilea

^Are u saying she was dumb?

Re: Shafilea

Depends how old were she.

Most of the girls who die in the hands of parents are either too dumb with too dumb parents.

Dumbness has to run in the family for such events to happen.

Now did some one said it happens mostly in our community ?? I wonder why

Re: Shafilea

Because most people here are fanatics with a perverted view of Islam . That’s why.

Re: Shafilea

So if a smarty pants like your self was born in such a house hold, what would you do?

Re: Shafilea

Anyone would know if their parents are animals. She should have (As I would) alerted the authorities immediately that her parents were trying to force her into a marriage.

Also, the girl was desperate enough to drink bleach and we may assume that she wanted to kill herself. It is my belief that taking someone else’s life is better than taking your own. I may come across as too violent, but its the SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. If someone is bold enough to commit suicide, he is bold enough to commit murder.

Re: Shafilea

I wonder where they got this idea that arranged marriages and honor killing are allowed as per Islam. As far as I know no mullah , scholar , book of hadees , tafseer , or fiqh even hints to that.

Re: Shafilea

She did try that , but somehow she ended up going to live with those dumb parents , the authorities should have taken custody of her after her first complaint and found to be true.

Re: Shafilea

Me too, but I feel that Mullahs aren’t vocal enough about this. If you ask them, they will say it’s not allowed in Islam. But they won’t bring up this topic during their long fiery speeches on TV. They don’t say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! This is GUNAH, ITS A SIN, DON"T DO IT!

Plus, the Mullahs that we usually see on TV are usually moderate. Small town Mullahs have widely different beliefs.

Re: Shafilea

^ unfortunately this is true…and there are reasons behind it.
imagine how the small-town mullahs earn their rozi-roti…how can they bite the hand that feeds them?
