Re: Shab Barat Divali, Diye Patakhe
I thought Middle-East countries were 99.9% Muslim. Sorry, my fault.
Again my Muslim friends will tell me that you care confusing 'Muslim identity' with Arab identity, and Islam with Arabism. But I will shut up lest you accuse me of insult or discrimination :(
sorry that was typo i wanted to type non-muslim
Re: Shab Barat Divali, Diye Patakhe
Just one clarification. When I say Indic Muslims, I refer to Muslims in North India, Bangladesh, W. Punjab and Karachi. AFAIK, Muslims in South India [except Hyderabad], Pashtuns and Sindhis use their native surnames.
acharya, though surnames were mainly based on occupation in Sindh, but since last two decades the trend has changed. Lohar (Blacksmith) became Abbasi, Qasai (became Ansari), etc
Re: Shab Barat Divali, Diye Patakhe
Language is a fickle mistress, words meant as a compliment might be misconstrued as an insult.
I do not believe that belonging to any creed , whether 5000 yrs or 1400 yrs old, blesses one automatically with wisdom. Whatever (lack of) wisdom I have is because of my own personal efforts.
I am extremely leery of discussing politics and religion online with conservative Indian Muslims as after some time they tend to get defensive and label me Hindoo Extremist, RSS fanatic or other such nonsense. In order to be deemed ‘secular’ one must agree 100% with them.
‘Drag name of holy Prophet’ sounds suspiciously insulting to me
