Just one clarification. When I say Indic Muslims, I refer to Muslims in North India, Bangladesh, W. Punjab and Karachi. AFAIK, Muslims in South India [except Hyderabad], Pashtuns and Sindhis use their native surnames.

acharya, though surnames were mainly based on occupation in Sindh, but since last two decades the trend has changed. Lohar (Blacksmith) became Abbasi, Qasai (became Ansari), etc
