Religion definitely contributes to these attitudes. As for the latter question, I think it depends on each specific society. In some societies, religion simply supports the already set and accepted beliefs and expectations of the society. An example of this is my own country. Islam simply supported many of the already set beliefs of Pashtunwali, so in the case of Afghanistan religion is not solely responsible for society’s attitude.
However, in other societies, religion does change and set the criteria for the society. A good example of the spread of Islam to various societies in sub saharan Africa. Many traditional African cultural beliefs and expectations, especially in relation to gender, differ vastly from Islam. Consequently, many of their current beliefs are heavily influenced by religion.
