Sexist Societies?

How do you define a sexist society? Is it just gender discrimination?

I mean is the term ‘sexist’ or ‘gender discrimination’ well defined and doesn’t change from culture to culture?

In a particular society, what does affect sexist behavior of people? Culture? Religion? or its something else?

Re: Sexist Societies?

Its about westernization instead.
Look at the lyrics of the song below.
BLACK EYED PEAS LYRICS - My Humps

Its not about the song only, actually my friend once told me about this song and also told that this song has got some sort of award like best production or something. Now imagine the mental condition of the society that is giving awards to such songs.
I wonder how some people can bash Islam in this regard.

Re: Sexist Societies?

so the definition of 'sexist' varies from east to west?

Re: Sexist Societies?

Society is by default, sexist, to bring equality of gender is act of civilization

Re: Sexist Societies?

In marketing, women are like beggars equipped with skills to allure customer. I have experienced so many incidents in Pakistan as well. Woman is tool to attract customers for those who respect woman. its funny.
And people from west still claim that west have given respect to woman. lolz

Re: Sexist Societies?

The real question is: what do women think of their status in western societies and how do they compare status of eastern women with them?

Re: Sexist Societies?

Obviously the women in business would not think themselves as sex slaves. But in my perspective they are.

Re: Sexist Societies?

Culture (inc family upbringing), religion, media..

I consider myself lucky to be here.. I had the freedom to choose who I married, who I slept with (rather than being married off to a stranger and expected to do 'it' on my wedding night because my parents or inlaws wanted it).. I decide how I dress, if I want to work etc.

We don't get harassed in the street by men (bar an occassional *whistle maybe.. certainly don't get guys trying to touch us up or saying obscene things on a *daily basis).. Being molested in public is practically unheard of here and people looking the other way and not wanting to help would be unthinkable nowadays in most places as well.. We aren't warned not go out alone because it's not safe or told to have a family member with us because it's simply not needed..

I saw a report on Al Jazeera about sexual harassment in Egypt a couple of days ago.. It was disgusting.. One woman was stripped naked IN PUBLIC, dragged off and assaulted.. others have been gang-raped IN PUBLIC IN CROWDS of people.. Are we seriously supposed to believe that women in the west have it worse than this??

Western society isn't perfect by any means but as a female it's much easier for me to be here than in many other parts of the world..

Re: Sexist Societies?

thanks for sharing.

This is another thing coming from the so-called liberty of women…

Re: Sexist Societies?

'Liberty' means the freedom to choose..

At least she had the choice..

Re: Sexist Societies?

Whats it all about?

Re: Sexist Societies?

Woman eats ice creme… in sexy style… :5:

Re: Sexist Societies?

Personally, I think all societies are sexist but sexist in very different ways and to varying extents. Even in western countries, there are certain expectations of women.

However, I agree with Deeba regarding sexism in the west and other countries. I'm sorry but it is ludicrous to compare being expected to be glamourous or "sexy" and spend a ton on beauty products (the type of sexism most prevalent in the west) to not having control over your own life and being treated as unworthy to make your own decisions simply because you're a woman, which is the type of sexism prevalent in many countries such as Sudan, Somalia, DRC, and unfortunately my own country.

Re: Sexist Societies?

How about incidents mentioned by Deeba?

Re: Sexist Societies?

Egyptians celebrate presidential oath ceremony by stripping down women in public and torture them… Egypt is Islamic country… :hmmm:

I heard **Tahrir Square **is very famous in such kind of rapes..

Those societies are not sexy… :5:

Re: Sexist Societies?

A couple of people have mentioned "sexy." Interestingly, that is a relatively modern construct. In decades past, even in the west, people were not expected to be sexy and this was not really considered a positive thing as it was associated with being overtly sexual or vulgar.

Another thing to note is that the expectation to be "sexy" does not only apply to women. On holiday to Dubai earlier this year, I've noted that there are expectations for men as well in this regard.

What was the observations to reach this conclusion?
