Sex Education

Where did you get yours from and at what age?

  • School
  • Parents
  • Books
  • TV
  • Friends etc.

And also will you (if you plan on having kids or if you already have) talk to your kids about it, if they ever have any questions or whatever. Or you think it’s something you can’t discuss?!

Cosmopolitan and Glamour Magazines. :)

^

At what age?
And they have that kinda stuff in those magazines?

Oh yah! Cosmo and Glamour are like your fashion, celebrity, entertainment and sex education magazine all in one! :) I started reading Cosmo when I was around 17. I got really bored of it though by my early 20s. Same old stuff.

Anyway, Cosmo and Glamour are pretty good. They discuss various women's problems affecting their health and sexual related issues.

TV

Would be nice if you told us about you first? :)

our first sex education classes happened in grade 6.. but i didnt attend.. lekin then in yr 7-9 it was compulsory.. it was like an actual subject we had to take in high school..

i still didnt understand nething.. and to this day im blonde as nething..

yeah i guess if my kids had a question id prob tell them.. or refer them to proper books... its just easier that way..

plus i reckon males of the family need to be educated about PMS.. and how females cant pray at certain times.. cus man it gets narky in the house when my bro runs after us for not praying.. uff!

Just tell him you don't have to pray this week...it should be understandable to him...if not then maybe u should tell him why. It would be weird for the first time but once you do it, i don't think he would run after u everytime with danda to make u pray again....and would probably respect that and would ask you to pray only once and not run after you :)

I learned the 'basics' in Junior High School in health class. Other than that, I knew nothing! :) To tell you the truth, I still know very little. I usually just sit with my mouth shut whenever the girls get together and the topic turns to sex. :)

thats exactly like me... im 23.. and i when the 4 yr olds are tlaking.. they are like 'u dont get it do ya?' and then have to tell me stuff... honestly i still dont get it..

hey Jal_pari man.. my bro was like that before.. but i think he kinda knows now... i mean he's engaged.. so maybe he's learnt a few things... but yeah when i go back to paki.. it gets a bit hard.. cus my male cousins are real blonde..

Well, the proper one was freshmen year at Highschool. We mostly studied about STDs and contraceptives, how to be safe and all. Emm other times from friends, magazines. And about with your kids, I think its definetly something important, I mean parents need to have "that talk" with kid when they are going through puberty. Just to make them aware of stuff. Especially in countries like pakistan where sex ed is not taught in schools, and not suppose to talk about it.

experience

hehehe. Sorry, i just thought that was funny, its really not.

We started getting sex ed classes at age 13 at my school, and they continued on an occasional basis until age 17. It was pretty pointless overall. There was nothing that couldn't have been covered in 2 classes of biology.

In fact, our human biology classes covered everything from menstruation, reproduction, sexually transmitted disease and contraception in a factual and scientific manner. I've always felt that given the biology lessons we had, our sex ed classes were totally un-needed and represented a waste of time.

My parents seemed distinctly relieved that I had those classes though, because it stopped them ever having to bring up that subject....

i personally believe the sex ed classes were a way of breaking the ice between the males and females..

we did more meditation exercises more than nething else... or watched pregnancies... which was pretty gross jsut before lunch.. other than that.. i dont think they provided any information... just an easy way of getting good grades in a class...

It started from friends at around age 13-14(can't remember)....eventually "explored" the internet and found mos tof my answers.
IT's funny...now tht i watch sitcoms...all the jokes tend to make sense!

Thank you everyone for replying!

Ur probably right, so lemme tell you guys about myself.
Well basically I picked up the basic stuff at school at the age of uuhhhmm 12 or something and then one day I was at the library and I found a 'kiddy' book (don't ask me how) on the topic. And that was a real eye-opener! Other than that mostly books I guess.
ANd yeah, I plan on having this conversation with my kids (if I ever have any) I think it's important, maybe cuz I didnt have that kinda relationship with my parents.

sadzz
I'm with you on the guy and PMS thing! Ok so 'some' of them know a girl can't pray or fast during her period but I've often noticed that they THINK they know the basic things behind it but when u start asking them about it they're like oooohhh is that how it works.
PS) meditation excersizes? .. elaborate please! DOn't know what to think of that.

LahoriMaharani
I have often wondered how things were in Pakistan regarding this topic as I think they don't have sex education at schools?! That's one of the reasons why I opened this thread. So what about girls you know in Pakistan, you happen to know where they got their education from?
I know about guys!

mAd_ScIeNtIsT
That was pretty much how we 'discussed' it at school aswell. We also had groupsessions about certain topics. So in future will you follow ur parents or maybe handle things differently?!

No way I'd talk this over with any kids that I might have inshallah. They'll find out at school anyway. Preferably in biology, but i don't think that these days sex ed is avoidable.

Edit: Actually, once they cover that stuff at school I'd give them a lecture on the religious aspects of sex.

We had a set of 3 books (big and fat) called "You and Your Health". They explain every single thing about ever common health/family issue you can think of. From a young age we were encouraged to look up stuff in those, I kinda got educated flipping through those because everything is explained pretty well. I knew that women arent supposed to pray during their periods (or few days a month) when I was 10. The maulvi saab at the madrassa where I read quran used to give a dars afterwards. He'd cover all topics related to daily life.
