sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

This is completely unacceptable! Children that young should not be learning about adult things full stop, never mind homosexuality. :grumpy:

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Thanks. Good to see folks going back and reviewing their original assumptions

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Looks like the trend is towards kids going back to school. The numbers appear to indicate that.

One sentence struck me - someone was surprised students in grade 2 and 3 were not aware of proper sentence structure. A lame attempt to indicate the school is not teaching it’s kids well, while focusing on sex.

Some parents have decided to leave the public schools. The kids will be the ultimate losers.

Hope these sentences were structured adequately.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Personally this is a stupid issue and it's plain ignorance on the part of these parents in my view. ^ But I think your taking it way to personally.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Your last sentence makes no sense! We are simply discussing a topic. Best to not try to read another's mind and discuss the topic on its merits!!

Back on 5opic - I wonder how many protesting parents have actually read the 200 plus page curriculum

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

I'm not trying to read your mind, I'm ultimately in agreement with you. Just saying when you say things like "their kids will be the losers." Or some of the other critical things you mentioned just sound more like an insult than valid points and seems counter productive.

But anyways, carry on "discussing."

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Can you explain why the phrase "kids will be the losers" is an insult? Isn't it a fact that the kids Will be the ultimate losers in this - since they are the ones missing out on much needed education?

I am also curious to know what "some of the other things I mentioned that sound like insukts"? Could it just be this is all in your head? Because I certainly haven't set out to insult anyone!

And thanks for the permission to carry on with "discussing"

Like I said, best to not try to get into people's heads and come up with conclusions pulled from thin air.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

I won't speak for S and S but the word "losers" has a very demeaning connotation.
Perhaps that's what is offensive?

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

I'm not sure that any would have read the full 200+ page curriculum. And it may not have been necessary for them to do so if they found some areas that are objectionable enough to their sensitivities.

We all have different beliefs and comfort levels. What I may find suitable for my 12 year old, some may not find appropriate for their 15 year olds. I don't think that there is a fair way to define right and wrong on every single part of the curriculum.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

"Some parents have decided to leave the public schools. The kids will be the ultimate losers"

The word loser when tsken in isolation can be insulting. But if anyone read the above two sentence and considers "losers" as being offensive to kids just did not read the post carefully. Clearly, here the kids are portrayed as the victims in this situation. There is absolutely no insult directed at the kids here.

Maybe, just maybe, folks shoukd read the post carefully before jumping to wrong conclusions.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

I agree with your last sentence.

Re yanking kids out of health class because the found certain parts objectionable implies the school has a very high bar to cross. An almost impossible hurdle. For every person will find something to disagree with in a large curriculum

That is why reasonable and respnsible adults shoukd take the time to read a curriculum before jumping the gun.

There is no substitute for knowledge and facts. And there is no remedy for knee jerks reactions based on cursory reading or heresy

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Upon further refelction, it is possible my comments re parents are a tad on the harsh side. But deservedly so. Not because they disagree with the curriculum. But because in all likelihoid, a majority didn't bother to read the entire curriculum. And probably leaned on a religious site - in this case catholic I think - to give them facts that have filtered every which way.

Facts matter. In fact, only facts matter.
