sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

This I agree with...too much too soon is bad. But age appropriate sex education is a must.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Right. 1-3 is a bit too early. Let's not call each other ignorant and what not. Smh.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

I didn't call anyone ignorant.

**I ASKED WHY ITS OKAY TO BE IGNORANT. **

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Everyone agrees that age appropriate education is a must. The only point of contention is:

Those who are objecting to this curriculum claiming some or most of the sex ed is age inappropriate have NOT read the actual curriculum. They are relying on second hand OPINION from conservative Web sites with an agenda.

By the way, there is thread in General that provides a link to the actual curriculum. All are invited to educate themselves on the contents of the curriculum.

You never stop firing shots, do you? Damn.
Khair, pls provide me with that link in general as well.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

I'm assuming that I'm one of those you are pointing at.
Thanks for posting the link to the actual curriculum. After reviewing it, I'm still not convinced that the material being presented is "age appropriate" and still feel that introducing such material is bringing things to minds that are not quite ready to absorb it.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

A big part of the new curriculum that I have not seen discussed here is internet safety and "sexting". It's a huge problem for kids. There are kids who have been charged with distributing child pornography in Mississauga junior high schools cause they are taking nude pics of themselves. I don't want to say technology has messed kids up but I don't know how else to word it. I'm glad they are going to be talking to kids about this.

I have also spoken to teachers who teach kids from grade 5 onwards. The stuff kids are doing now .. we did not. It is a different world now. These kids know everything from a very early age.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Scary :(

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Yes. Your assumption is correct.

Thanks for checking the link and reviewing the curriculum.

Look forward to the specifics of the contents that are not age appropriate.

Anyway - this was not.you - but there was also another misconception. Some thought parents don't have the right to take their kids away from classes that they deem harmful. As you know this is not the case.

The other misconception was that sex ed formed a major portion - again not you. Fact is it comprises 0.25 pct only

Also, is there any sex ed content that is age appropriate? If yes, what would those contents be?

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

I would say...the sex education in Canadian schools which is legislated to teach our young minds... isn't age appropriate. That is all i would say.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

Just a general query to all those who feel the sex education in Canadian schools is not age appropriate

1) Did you read the 224 page document?
2) What specific contents are age inappropriate - please provide the content and the corresponding grade to which the content is taught
3) Is there ANY content in the sex ed portion of the Physical and Health curriculum that you find is useful and age appropriate?

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

It's so true. The things kids know these days is shocking sometimes. Its at a much faster pace than when I came to know such things. The only reason I see this curriculum as a benefit is because of the conversations my nieces and nephews of many years younger would have with me and my cousins thinking we are their cool khalas/phuppos when they were just babies (grades 4+.) Scary indeed. If their going to know about these things, I gather it's better in a learning environment than a misinformed conversation with their friends.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

It is unfortunate that people object to something they haven't taken the time to fully understand. It is one thing if they stay they find majority of the curriculum to be useful, and have issues with a small portion. It is another when they dismiss an entire Physical and Health based curriculum because some sentences go against their personal belief system. It is worse when they base this on hearsay or second hand information.

Some have a predetermined opinion and will stick to their guns jo matter the facts. The facts are 99 plus percent of this document is extremely useful to kids and has nothing to do with sex ed. At least 75 pct of this 1 percent is or should be non controversial.

That leaves 0.25 pct to argue over.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

The devil, it seems, is not in the curriculum, but in the details.

Re: sex ed comes to Canada. Very worried

yes....there is age appropriate content....particularly the material dealing with internet/digital safety as Mehnaz mentions because times have changed since we were in that age group.....digital devices have really impacted the young generation in a huge way.
