I met a German guy once and I couldn’t help but compliment him on how American he sounded. And like any other immigrant, he worked on it to make it sound that way. I’m pretty sure he’s proud of that. He had only been in the country for four years.
Having an accent makes you stick out in a bad way. If it’s possible for you to change your accent and avoid that negative attention. Why not do it?
