Re: Serving Guests ...
I agree with you.
I think that, if you are a bhooka insaan (bhooka as in laalchi i.e. as in above example) then dont invite people at all.
Becasue this way you will make your guests feel uneasy. If there are 5 people and an equal number of kababs, some of your guests may not take a kabab at all, thinking that there already is less food.
And before somebody starts saying that "its better to make less than more and have to throw things away and thats why such people make less food bla bla bla" --
i dont believe that thats their motive behind it.
Agar kisi ko khanay ke liye bulao, tau phir khullay dil se khilao.
Re: Serving Guests ...
woah! silly new trend! Have seen it rarely shukar. There always has to be food for minimum one more person extra. What if the guest likes it so much and wants more...? Yes you are right CB, it usually happens that the host themselves eat sparingly if the food is little so that the guest wouldn't feel uncomfortable to wipe the plate off. Like my mom makes these very yummy shami kababs and there were only 5 left in the freezer. My dad's friend came over achanak sey....my mom still fried all the 5 kababs even though it was just dad and him. The guest ate 3 kababs!! mA. he said he really liked 'em! Dad had two to accompany his friend lol. Now that felt good :)
Re: Serving Guests …
Even if you are offering variety , you should have more food than the number of mehmans for each item. For example for 5 mehmans 8 kababs and 10 nans . Who knows that a couple of mehmans might want to have two or more kababs or nans.
Those poeple who have 5 kababs and 5 naans for 5 mehmans should put a name sticker on each kabab and nan for each mehman to prevent others from taking more than one. ![]()

Re: Serving Guests ...
One must have a generous display of food when guests are coming over. My question is, how many dishes should we prepare? I see that many folks have so much variety that you could never really try everything...some flavors just don't go together either.
LIke, for example, at a recent dawat, the hosts served: nihari, haleem, biryani, koftay, tandoori chicken, chicken shorba, mutton karhai, seekh kabab, chicken handi, raita, naan, salad, kheer, pineapple dessert. I think the first three items are stand alones, or at least shouldn't be served together with each other....then there was way too much food. People were sticking to just a few items and there were degchis of a couple of items that remain untouched. Now wasn't that a waste of time, energy and money?
So how many dishes should you serve at a dinner for let's say 10 guests?

We have that kind of dawat , we do not waste it , we give it away to whoever wants to take it with them after dawat and if still some is leftover we freeze it for future home use or take it out if someone comes over unexpected.
Re: Serving Guests ...
OMGhahahah we know someone who does that. gin gin k sab kuch rakha hota hai. and then they keep an eye on who eats what. its disgusting.

Then why would you go to such a dawat , I would not. Really .
Re: Serving Guests ...
I think that there should be a limit of how many dishes we serve and then those dishes should be cooked in moderation so its enough for everyone.
One thing that I dont like (with all the appreciation for the ladies who do that) is that you are invited at 7 PM. Even if you reach at 7:30, you find that the lady host is still giving final touches to the biryani (not to mention that she looks dead tired) and guy is gone to indian store to buy naaan and yogurt for raita ... not to mention that the whole house is smelling of Qorma
that shows very poor management. If they chose to go with less dishes, they could've done much ahead of guests arrival time and be ready to welcome the guest.
Re: Serving Guests ...
I guess you need to plan your menu in a way where if you're serving something like nihari...I dont think biryani along with that works well.

It must because the combo is the shortest route to heaven anyways.
