Serious Cough

wife’s been coughing her brains out for the last 10-12 days. went to the dr last week. she prescribed a few medicines…antibiotics…but to no avail. cough is getting worse by the minute. she can’t sleep and now the cough is so intense that she can’t even breathe properly. is there any way to lessen the intensity of the cough if not possible to stop it all together? any home-made-remedy or anything that can help…please share…she is again gone to the dr now.

Re: Serious Cough

Thats not very nice for either of u, i hope she gets better soon. I read recently that coughing is most likely caused by mucus / phlegm (sorry!) travelling down towards your lungs, and as it travels it irritates the lining causing a coughing reaction.

So if it isn't a totally dry cough, she should try making herself cough while she is lying face down, bottom half on the bed, but top half hanging over the bed, with face near the floor. That way the mucus should make its way down and she should cough it out. Do steam inhalation for about 10 mins first tho.

Also have a good gargle with warm water mixed with salt and aspirin first.

Re: Serious Cough

Mamaof3 recommended Neti-pot many times. It is also mentioned exclusively in this thread, but don’t know whether or not cough can be also treated by using Neti-pot.

Hope your wife feels better soon.

Re: Serious Cough

well i ve had a very similar cough just last ttwo weeks .. and my solution is .. neeeem garam water in a glass .. and put honey init .. water should be hot like ..you drink tea .. and put in honey so its sweet enough .. and drink an average size glass of water-honey every three hours .. for a few days .. and that should kill the dry cough and bring out any balgham there is .. and InshaAllah .. hopefully cough will be gone in no time ..

Honey is something which is a cure to so many illnesses .. as the Prohet SAW also said. So withhthat Baraka .. InshAllah it will help her ..

My Dua is for the Bimaar that she recovers soon .. (Aameen)

Re: Serious Cough

awww she is sick? :(

Glad you consulted with a doctor to rule out any major illnesses.

sometimes there isnt much you can do about a cough. trust me I know...i get them all the time!
If you have tried everything......the only thing left is to wait it out. In the meantime, perhaps you can put on a humidifier, steam shower or vaporizers help give temporary relief as well. Keep her head elevated when she is in bed and give her plenty of green tea with honey.
inshAllah may she get better soon.

Re: Serious Cough

Saieen, not sure where you live but in US there is a product called SudaCare shower tabs. You place the tablet by the shower drain and make the water nice and steamy it makes this lovely vapor steam that is SO helpful in clearing out the mucous from the chest. Also, vapor plugs, vapor rub etc....that lovely menthol-eucalyptus really is very soothing and helpful in clearing it all out.

An OTC medication that is also very helpful is called Mucinex. Its a tablet, use twice a day and has the same effect, it thins out the mucous so that its easier to clear out and it works very well with little side effect. Plain Mucinex just thins out the mucous and Mucinex DM thins it out but also soothes itchy, sore and irritated bronchial tubes.

If part of the problem is that her sinuses are infected and producing the mucous, it ends up dripping down into her chest so in that case a neti-pot would be really helpful too. Does she have headache or eye-aches as a symptom? This means sinuses are involved.

Sounds like you are taking good care of your wife...I hope she feels better soon.

Re: Serious Cough

Give Mucinex a try.

Re: Serious Cough

Since you are asking for some desi totka , I have seen Ground Black Pepper(kali mirch) mixed in honey working like charm. Honey is natural anti bacterial.

Re: Serious Cough

Fresh ginger tea. Add honey to make it taste less vile, but its better if drank without the honey, in its purest form. It is awful, but really does work. Boil water, add fresh ginger, let it simmer, drink in one, job done!

Re: Serious Cough

I just battled the worst cough of my life this past winter...it was so painful I almost gave up speaking because just about anything was irritating my throat. I did a combo of things to help stop it:

Finished two courses of anitbiotics

My dad got a humidifier in my room and I used it day and night and also mixed Vicks in the water to help me breathe easier.

I got Vicks tissues - those are sooooooooooooo good when you're constantly sneezing and need to open up your sinuses.

I used MO3's recommendation: The Neti-Pot. This is helping my remaining congestion.

I gargled using warm/hot water and salt (RP mentioned aspirin too).

I put 3 tbsp of honey + pinch of salt + pinch of black pepper + about a tspn of ginger in coffee mug 3/4 full of water. I microwaved it for two minutes and sipped that...that helped calm my cough down during the worst parts of it.

Hope she feels better...I know how much it hurts! :(

Re: Serious Cough

thanx for all the suggestions and help.

latest update is that they have transferred her to the hospital, emergency ward. she's going through tests to figure out the problem. her dr said it seems like pneumonia. but so far all the tests have come negative. so they'll perform more tests and are keeping her for the night.

Re: Serious Cough

i hope she gets well really soon. inshAllah!!! :hugz: for sara:hugz:

She needs a broncial spray...like a steriodal oral spray. That happened with me once...I forget what the name of it but it was aswesome. The cough significantly reduced in 2 days.

Dont worry she'll be fine inshallah!

Re: Serious Cough

Please keep us posted. All prayers for your wife.

Chest X-ray, X-ray of sinuses (water view) and perhaqps CT chest will be needed if nothing else is found.

Many times these kind of pneumonias or infections are due to viruses and atypical bacteria which do not grow easily on sputum test or have obvious chest X-ray findings.

aww I hope she gets better :hugz:
check with the doc again and see if its Bronchitis. Its the inflammation of airways and usually symptoms occurs during winter times. Remember if the cough is persistent for 3 months during the winter then most likely its bronchitis.
Doc should give inhaler to have the airway dilate.

do let us know what her doc says.
feel better sara :flower1:
