Separatist movements in India

Tamil Nadu Politics: Independence Movements
(Freedom, Liberation, Separatist or Secessionist Movements)

Tamil Nadu had one of the earliest independence movements (separatist or secessionist or liberation movements) in India even before the British left. Unlike the Pakistan movement the latter is based on nationalism, ethnicity and language and not on religion. The first “Tamil Nadu for Tamils” Conference was held in December 10, 1939. Mr. C.N. Annadurai, the chief lieutenant of Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy (EVR) was the principal speaker and he explained the reasons and justification for the demand in his own spell binding oratory.

The Dravida Kazhagam (DK) of Periyar E. V. Ramaswamy and its offshoot Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had as their primary goal an independent Dravida Nadu (southern India which included Tamil Nadu) separate from India. Following the 1963 law enacted by the Congress Party Government of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru that banned parties and individuals demanding independence (freedom or separatism or secession) from India, DMK abandoned it.

Though Periyar continued with is “Tamil Nadu for Tamils” slogan, one of the few who openly and actively campaigned for and independent Tamil Nation (Tamil Nadu) was the Tamil National Poet Mr. Durai Manickam (popularly known as Pavalareru Perunchiththiranar). Some groups and individuals demanded something just short of total independence from India.

Re: Separatist movements in India

I never knew that Tamils were so fed up with so called country of India…See what this article further mentions …

The British conquered the various kingdoms in the Indian subcontinent one by one. Then, for ease of administering (ruling) the conquered territories, the British set up an administrative unit called India. A country or administrative unit called India (or by any other name), comprising of the current territories of India, never existed in all known history, before the British conquest and consolidation.

During the British colonial rule, people of the Indian subcontinent (including those areas now in Pakistan and Bangladesh) had a common purpose and agenda, namely, freedom from British colonial rule. Such a one-ness of purpose never before existed amongst the various peoples of the Indian subcontinent. It brought them together. Finally, in the middle of the 20th century (in the middle 1940s), the British decided to end their rule over the subcontinent. The one-ness of purpose that evolved during the freedom struggle against the British held, with the one exception that most of the Muslim-majority regions in the north became a separate nation called Pakistan at the insistence of the Muslims. Much of the rest of the subcontinent became a country called “India”.

India, as a country, by any name, never existed before the British colonial rule in all history, in spite of the oft-repeated false propaganda of the long history, one-ness and unity of India.

Re: Separatist movements in India

Navtech, you have a point, since there is freedom of speech it works. At the same time, Lahore.. Democracy has proved that it can provide outlet for the feelings of people and allows country to flourish. It has shown in Punjab, Assam, Sikkim and Uttranchal. Such things are common to us since we don't kill people who have different opinions..
Yes, there is challenge of our democratic system being hijacked. Which was done by Mr. Laloo Yadav in Bihar and Communists in Bengal. Till now it has shown resolve to bounce back, and we keep hoping that it will work for us again...

Re: Separatist movements in India

Lahore, same was thought process of Germans, and may be of Koreans today.
Anyway and please get it right India is of Indians, not of Hindus or Muslims. Its the same case as US is Americans, not of Christians, UK is of English not of Christians, France is of French not of Christians...........
Whenevery you equate India = Hindu, you forget that India wasn't/isn't based on religion..
