Separatist movements in India

Nagaland Wants Independence from India

Muthu Raman

TAMIL TRIBUNE, August 2005 (ID. 2005-08-02)

On August 14, 1947, the day before British colonial rulers transferred power to the governments of India and Pakistan, Nagas declared their homeland, Nagaland, independent. The new Indian Government did not recognize the declaration and sent its army to hold Nagaland as part of India. There has been a war between Indian troops and Naga freedom fighters from that time, with occasional ceasefires and peace talks. Indian army was never able to defeat Naga freedom fighters and there is stalemate. At the present time there is a ceasefire and Indian Government is holding talks with the dominant militant group, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah).

Earlier this year the General-Secretary of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), Mr. Thuingaleng Muivah stated their position in an interview with British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and some local news media. Here are some salient points put forth by Mr. Muivah.

“Nagas would not accept occupation of Nagalim (Greater Nagaland) by any force.”

“Sovereignty of the Naga people belongs to the Naga people and to the Naga people alone. There cannot be otherwise. Nagas have a right to decide their future, to determine their fate also. So long as that is there adjustments can be made… So long as the national identity of the Nagas is recognized and honoured that is possible… It should be a federation of India and Nagalim.”

Independent Nation of Manipur

“Independence Demand Day [1999]”

It has been 50 years of colonial bondage since India annexed Manipur. It has been completely 20 years to constitute “Revolutionary People’s Front” in this era of de-colonization to emancipate once an independent country Manipur. Since RPF has declared February 25 the foundation day of RPF, as “Independence Demand Day” on 15 February 1995, the day has been observing as “Independence Demand Day”. On this occasion, RPF salute our people with revolutionary greetings and presenting a brief statement of the liberation struggle.

RPF took the last and the present year as “Year of Unity”. Because in that year revolutionary organizations of Manipur and neighboring state (Region) has done many a campaigns jointly against the common enemy Mayang India. On this day, every revolutionary organizations are working hard to bring unity minimizing the differences. It is not belief that the effort will get no achievement. This is progress of the liberation struggle. Among the progress it can be mentioned that:

To boycott India’s important days jointly;

Declaration of “National Black Day” on 15 October;

Joint condemnation of RPF, TPDF and UNLF against the forcible annexation of Manipur and Tripura by India;

Meetings for unity among the revolutionary organization of Manipur and the Region;

Joint military and political campaigns;

Joint international propaganda, and,

Opening Inters web sites.

Re: Separatist movements in India

**Tripura People’s Democratic Front [TPDF] **

Confronted with the problem of direct threat to their very existence as a distinct people and the loss of the means of survival, the land, Tripura National Volunteers (initially Tribal National Volunteers) launched an armed struggle in the early 1980s to liberate Tripura from India’s’ colonial rule so that the Tripuri people could be saved from this twin danger. The TNV received help and support from the Mizo National Front (MNF) which was also fighting against India for an independent Mizoram.

Re: Separatist movements in India

Revolutionary people’s front (RPF) , Manipur

A sovereign and Independent country Manipur was annexed by India on 15 October 1949 after signing illegal and unconstitutional Manipur Merger Agreement, on 21 September 1949. To restore the suspended freedom of Manipur and to resist the occupation force of India People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the army of the Revolutionary People’s Front was founded on 25 September 1978 after dissolving the Revolutionary Government of Manipur that took general amnesty from the Manipur State Government in the year 1971. To meet the other revolutionary organisation of our region, the Seven Sister States, in-group level Revolutionary People’s Front was formed on 25 February 1979. Then PLA became the regularised army of Revolutionary People’s Front.
