I have heard that in islaam a wife can ask her husband to give her a separate place to live … Is it true? Does anyone know of the reference?

Separate from in-laws. Yes. Known mas'Allah, many authentic hadeeth are available.

If he cannot afford it then he needs to find some sort of a partition in the existing home where she can have her own living quarters.

It is also advisable to discuss this matter before getting married i.e. weather your to-be husband will be able to uphold your right in Islam or not.
