Most of us know this tradition of waking up people for sehri by beating the dhol.
Though, we never heard these dhol walas coming to our street at sehri, they always came to receive Eidi on Eid day, with their saaz o saman (dhol, shehnai, etc). We always asked them ‘Eidi? per kiyun?’. lols. Some sharati bachas used to eat achaar in front of them to make them be-surra.
We normally use to wake up at sehri time hearing molvi saheb from nearby masjid saying ‘Allah’ after some intervals… and then at the end of sehri there used to be a siren (we used to call it ghughghoo).
So, what are / were the different ways to wake up people in your areas at sehri times?
Hazraat sehri ka waqt khatam hony me 10 minute baqi hain.Yesterday we didn't know the exact timings of fajar prayers and when we heard this announcement we thouht 10 mins were left but after 5 mins we heard hazraat sehri ka waqt khatam ho chuka hy followed by siren.
Lol we didn’t have a dholi even back home. We used to wake up to sounds of naat khwaan and quran recitals coming from the nearby masjids. Then daadi ammi used to come in aur sar pe haath pher ke pyaar se jagaaya karti theen.
Me with my bro stay awake while the others always sleep, so we wake them up. Mom has azaan app on her phone which also helps. The only problem is whenever one of us siblings sleep, it;s pretty hard for us to get up and we;re always eating with our eyes closed :D It's been easier to stay awake this year probably because of less gap b/w iftaar and sehri.
There was a fakeer that used to wake us up. No Dhol, but one of those tin cans. "Rozdaar sehri karne utho!!!". Scary voice and noise, but as we grew up we got used to it. On the day of eid, he would come by to collect sadaqat-ul-fitr.
Siren marked the end of sehri and also for iftar. To declare Eid, there would be multiple sirens on chand raat.
jitnaa 'arsaa maiN AligaRh meN rahaa, vahaN university kaa siren bajtaa thaa [saHrii kaa waqt Khatm hone se 15 minute pahle] aur phir iftaar ke waqt bajtaa thaa...siren koii 30 second tak bajtaa rahtaa thaa. aisaa lagtaa thaa jaise 'soor' phooNkaa jaa rahaa ho kiuN k meraa maskan qareeb meN hii thaa. :)
Canada meN to sab apne apne time se uTh kar ibaadaat karte haiN phir saHrii ke Khaatme ke waqt se koii 30-35 minute pahle neeche aate haiN. Iftaar meN to har koii hii apnii ghaRiyaaN taaktaa rahtaa hai. lol
mere gaaoN meN ek aur masalah thaa. naqqaarah bajaane waalaa [salaam bhaaii] aksar ek aadhaa minute der kar dete haiN the aHtiyaat ke taur par magar mere vaalid marHoom intizaar nahiiN karte the ... unkaa kahnaa hai k iftaar meN derii nahiiN karnii chaahiye. vo apnii ghaRii radio se milaa kar rakhte the.
ek sawaal hai, off the topic though:
why ahl e tashai'yo [Shia Hazraat] break their fast 15-20 minutes later than us?
