Segregated workplaces

85% of Pakistani Muslims want segregated workplaces. Are you one of them? Is your current workplace segregated (or not), and what are your experiences with them?

Lebanon & Turkey :k:

Re: Segregated workplaces

I wouldn't want segregated workplaces. The issue is more to do with the fact that in a women-only office, there is always more politics than work. :P

Re: Segregated workplaces

you mean your preference, or do you mean the poll results?

Re: Segregated workplaces

What's interesting is that in both Pakistan and Egypt, the countries with the highest scores, lewd staring at women is very commong. In Egypt, there is a lot of sexual harassment too (I don't know about Pakistan).

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the responses in favour were from women.

My sister-in-law was an auditor for one of the world's biggest accountancy firms in Pakistan. She used to refuse to audit some of that firm's clients because of how the men at the client offices would behave towards her.....

Re: Segregated workplaces

Having worked all my life in mixed sexed professional environments and now for the last 3 years in single sex ( all females) its actually quite a challenge! I speak only for myself so please dont all jump at my following statements:rolleyes:…Men seem to have a rational and " say it as it is" approach that always compliments a rather reactionary and somewhat “sensitive” reaction by their counterparts… this seems to balance issues at hand… since working in an all female environment… it gets very “emotionally wrought” where women react as opposed to think , reflect and and engage…there’s a clash of personalities , and whilst this is prevalent in every working environment, women tend to internalise issues and consequently allow themselves to become sensitive and here is where emotions run high… in fact … I miss working with males… they also add much needed humour to the corporate work place:k:

My vote goes to Mixed genders in the workplace.. kinda all balances out :hehe:

Re: Segregated workplaces

My preference.

Re: Segregated workplaces

Ravage, looking at detailed results of the poll, do you believe it is a reliable indication of general attitudes of people in Pakistan?

Re: Segregated workplaces

im pretty surprised. either Pakistan has changed significantly in the past few years, or my (urban) sample is deflected by very conservative attitudes or the poll is a little off. Still polls have standards of deviations, and even generous amounts of error wouldnt significantly change Pakistan's place in that list of countries.

Re: Segregated workplaces

Interesting!

Re: Segregated workplaces

Take a real poll and you will see more then 80 % Pakistanis wanting to work at unsegregated workplaces ... And may be more then 50 % already do !

Re: Segregated workplaces

In my line of work, women do have thier uses… I dont mean that in a dirty way… so calm down. I think generally people would assume my sort of work would be male dominated, which to be honest it is. However there have been times I have wished a female colleague was with me becuase not all Police work is chasing your typical gangsters… what on earth are you supposed to do with a proffesional shoplifting granny or something? :omg:

Also women are helpfull in keeping a good record and generally my female colleagues have better memory than the fellas, in fact one CSO knows the number plates of all the vehicles in her sector thats like 300+ cars and vans. I just wish I had a memory like that:eek:.

As for the workplace itself I have my own office not a big one like the chiefs, but its comfortable and I like working indoors alone. Outside it depends on the case but most of the time I have a juniour constable or Sergeant and most of the times it’s a bloke… though sometimes I have to work with a female colleague and to be honest theres advantages and disadvantages. In the day about town a WPC is okay but for night time brawls its a liability. :cb:

Re: Segregated workplaces

A question ravage how many of those polled were women asking for segregated work environments?

Re: Segregated workplaces

To get to 85% there cant really be a huge disparity between men and women anyway.

Re: Segregated workplaces

I am certainly not one of them. Never have been. I don't understand how can a company work in a segregated environment. I mean, how would the meetings be held?

There can be very few companies where segregation is possible. I think most of those 85% who say they want segregation, are actually saying that they don't want women to work at all.

Re: Segregated workplaces

Among Muslim publics surveyed by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project in 2010, Pakistani Muslims are the most supportive of segregating men and women in the workplace. Fully 85% favor making gender segregation the law in their country. A narrower majority (54%) of Muslims in Egypt also support making gender segregation the law in their country. Opinions are more divided in Jordan and Nigeria. Half of Jordanian Muslims favor gender segregation and 44% oppose it. Among Nigerian Muslims, nearly the same percentage favor making segregation of men and women in the workplace the law in their country (49%) as oppose it (48%). In Lebanon, Turkey and Indonesia, majorities of Muslims reject legalized gender segregation in the workplace. More than eight-in-ten in Lebanon (89%) and Turkey (84%) express this opinion, as do 59% of Muslims in Indonesia. Read more

Before it is accepted or refuted, care to post the detail of this so called study?

The hypothesis, method, population selection criteria, results, calculation method etc.?

Hallmark of a bogus ‘study’ is not to reveal all details for reviewers to read.

The link in the end is not even related to this so called study itself. :smack:

Great job posting junk.

Re: Segregated workplaces

I don't really care either way but I feel that total gender segregation is impractical.

Re: Segregated workplaces

Isay kehte hein jumping the gun. There is a PDF link to the full report in the second link I posted. Here you go:

Re: Segregated workplaces

Let me ask you, do you really believe what these so called studies suggest based on the available data?

Do you really believe, a sample size of 1000 to 2000 population is enough to conclude and accept the results from countries where millions live?

And the method of conducting the ‘study’ and computing results? Where is the detail of that?
Forget this question just answer the question on ‘sample’ size.

Great job in believing ANYTHING in the name of ‘research’ !

Re: Segregated workplaces

Do you have a mathematical background diwana? Just want to clarify before I answer your question.
