Re: Secularism vs Islam - Something to think about...
The most devout Muslim, Christian or of any other faith can live in a secular society and still practice their faith. Secularism as a governing concept has nothing to do with atheism or the lack of religion in a society, only in the governing of society. Pious Muslims are no less secular than the pious Christian living in a secular society (if one feels it necesseary to use the term on an individual level.)
Re: Secularism vs Islam - Something to think about...
I haven’t read a convincing argument as to why secularism wouldn’t work for Islam or any other religion for that matter. You can practice your religion within the framework of laws accepted by majority. What makes the religion so rigid that it can’t appreciate diversity?
Re: Secularism vs Islam - Something to think about...
Sure as long as it's not the overiding principle in governance.
You see a Muslim would probably want to balance the importance of the first 'essential principle' of secularism (The improvement of this life by material means, George Jacob Holyoake 1846) along with more spiritual goals with the freedom to tip the balance either way.
If this is the 'modern' understanding of secualrism then it's little different from what the Islamic nations have strived to achieve since their inception.
This freedom to tip the balance however is in question, with bans on the slightest divergence from a draconian version of materialism (France headscarf ban etc).
So you see we probably all agree on the fundamentals, it's difficult not too as it's pretty much what the majority practice in any case. But the fine scale freedoms and liberties are in question, which of course make all the difference in some cases.
Re: Secularism vs Islam - Something to think about...
What islamic nations are you talking about which examples can you show that have succeeded using the defunct and disasterous secular systems?
Also this idea of materialism which secularists base their ideas on has been refuted many times i dont know why they even try to use it as an argument anymore. Nations will not change because you use have material progression , Communist Russia did not happen because of a materialistic evolution, in reality a group took over in a coup, and started to apply its thoughts upon the people, and changed the system you can even apply this example on china, capitalist nations etc.
Re: Secularism vs Islam - Something to think about…
The given statement is very true. The same has happened in Islamic states throuout centuries since the invent of Islam.
Communist states were far from being secular. they had one point formula, ‘belive in the State ideolgy’.
