Getting back on topic, if by bad you mean if it’s wrong, then no it isn’t. As to why it’s not practiced, well I know that maintaining a standard of living is a major factor among some Arabs, on top of ensuring fairness between multiple wives. Otherwise, its practice in general requires hard work to ensure that one is being fair in this type of situation and it is an added burden on the man. As to why it isn’t accepted (or maybe encouraged is a better word here) among desis, I would guess is the lack of confidence in the men’s ability to act justly between multiple wives while maintaining a certain standard of living. Of course since it isn’t the norm in the culture (unlike some others), it will also be looked at as something that is out of the norm.

It’s never going to work well in our culture when the wife is traditionally expected to live with in-laws.. Can you imagine on top of that the husband going off to live and sleep with another woman at least 50% of the time.. Our women (or women in general) I expect would not be able to tolerate that after making the huge sacrifice of living with his family and looking after them, whilst he isn’t even going to be living there himself at least half the time and will be sleeping with someone else..
I don’t doubt it can work in certain situations, but our system already places a greater burden on the wives, I think this would push many to absolute breaking point..
