With the nomination and hood-winked selection of new PM, the “allies” have proven to be a party to the circus that is touted as being a democracy. Infact, it is far from it. In a real democratic system, it is the public’s interests that are supreme. Yet what we see is the interests of the “selected” representatives, their kin and kith’s interest being looked after at the cost of general populace.
It should leave no doubt in the mind of all those observing how treacherous this set up has come to prove itself in the past 4+ of misGovernance.
Hope is that Supreme Court will continue to uphold and enforce the law and give proper punishment to all those found guilty of defiling the integrity of the Pakistani public interests.
Re: Second blow by President to integrity of the nation
To be honest, how can MQM, ANP or PML-Q can justify to their voters for what they did??? oh i forgot, these parties, specially MQM and PML-Q are voted in by the voters at gun point or the voters are poor farmers who have no option but to vote for them!!!

The beauty of the system is that when the elections roll around, those that have failed to fulfill their mandate will be thrown out.
This may not be an ideal form of democracy, but then what is? Give me one democracy in which the public interest is ALWAYS supreme.
Remember, a democratic govt can be voted out, but a dictator is thrown out by force if at all.

I was watching one PML-Q female MNA trying to justify voting for this clown. She said there was no alternative and if he doesn't write a letter in four months he will be out. What logic and what defence of their pathetic decision. Silence from the "true representatives " of the middle class - MQM is deafening.

The most interesting case was of Faisal Saleh Hayat, the guy who took Raja Rental to the court on corruption charges and invented the term Raja Rental for him, he also voted for him and would be serving as a minister under him anytime soon
and look at Pervaiz Elahi, the so-called leader of PML-Q, is going to serve under him ( is the only PML-Q member who took oath as a minister) and protect his son's interest!!!

Very disappointed in Saleh Faisal Hayat, I use to hold him in high regard when he stood up to Zia and went to jail, but since than he has become a permanent lota. pervaiz Elahi the less said the better
Re: Second blow by President to integrity of the nation
PPP's time out of power hasn't been wasted. They have perfected their skills at stealing. Zardari(ii) has found a new way to steal the public's money. Instead of stealing the money himself he gets his gang members to steal it and give it to him while they also get a share and his patronage. Corruption has been sub-contracted out.
Re: Second blow by President to integrity of the nation
Im no fan of the PPP, and I don't doubt that they are corrupt, but aren't yo al being a bit to rough on them. I mean, did we really expect them to transform a society like Pak overnight? Running Pak is very different from watching it being run on Geo.
Re: Second blow by President to integrity of the nation
^ Fair point, but when the stupidity trancends anything that has ever gone before and sets such dizzyingly high records for corruption then even the most common and simple witted person starts to think ill of those in power.

Well I don't know. I mean we could compare. How bad was the BB govt in the early 90's? How bad was the PML govt after? Look at the pictures of people being beaten in the streets and other depravity during Zias rule. Look the level to which Karachi descended in the 90's.
Its all relative. It looks bad, but then it looked just as bad before.
Corruption as far as I'm concerned is a write as far as Pakistan goes. Everyone is corrupt, thats a given. Difference is only in degrees and variety.
So ignoring the rampant corruption, FOR NOW, which we all expected, there were a few bright spots in the past couple of years. Devolving more power to the provinces, giving the provinces more responsibility, more control over their own resources, and more resources at their disposal will have a beneficial effect in the long term.
Other accomplishments, changing the name of NWFP while seemingly a minor issue, will endear this govt and this era in the minds of the KP residents for some time, if for no other reason.
Besides this, just the fact that they have survived thus far under the circumstances is a victory for Pakistani democracy.

Any minor endearment due to name changes is quickly diminished when you count the sheer loss of sovierinity and how many drones now fly above them.

Well, Pak govt isn't responsible for a war it didn't create. Firstly, the Pak govt isn't necessarily the one calling the shots in FATA, nor are they responsible for what the taliban does or does to do, and nor are they capable of preventing the US from fighting its war on its own terms.
The govt has to work within the confines of its own capacity. Your expectations of this govt would be reasonable perhaps in a country that isn't Pak and has a more mature economic, and political system. But Pak being what it is, the govt can only do so much. The sad truth is that the govt has to pretend to have a much larger influence and much greater capacity then it does. But in reality, it is beholden to the Generals, the US, powerful lobbies and financial institutions keeping the country afloat.
I think under the circumstances we should sympathize. I can't begin to imagine what it is like running a country like Pak in real terms, and dealing with complexities of global politics. If wikileaks has taught us anything, its that behind closed doors, behind the hand shakes and smiles, there is a great deal of arm twisting and a lot of stuff that could only be described as sinister.
Re: Second blow by President to integrity of the nation
Thats no reason to remain inactive. To do nothing is betrayal of its people and thats the nub of the matter. It does not matter wether its in its capacity or not thats not for me or you to decide. The fact that the Government took money to stand aside is not forgivable.

They all took money. Its how Pak works.

Well that still does not make it right. Its evident that if thats how things work then there is a flaw with the whole system.
Hence why those who say we need something new have a more than valid point. Perhaps you will agree democracy by representation is clearly not working here?

There is a problem. There has always been a problem.
The problem exists not because its a democracy, but because its an immature democracy. Going back to the point you can't expect good governance without letting it mature.
Re: Second blow by President to integrity of the nation
Well if this is how it matures then many will never accept it. We shall agree to disagree on this matter. But I salute your ability to try and stay nuetral in these matters I deeply envy that skill.
