Bhai Jaan I didnt blame the English for making us eat Prawns..actually its more of a delicacy in our country somewhat like a status symbol. Poor people cannot afford to eat prawns and lobsters. But when people go abroad like UK, Canada...they start eating it caz of low prices. That analysis of mine is from economic perspective.... now
Lets talk on this issue from biological ( scientific) perspective
Biologically speaking, Shrimps and Fish donot fall in the same phylum category they are two different species...
Crabs, lobsters, shrimp, barnacles and many other animals belong to the phylum arthropods. In fact, 75% of all animals belong to the phylum arthropoda (which also includes spiders and insects)

Fish on the other hand belong to phylum Chordata which is not the same as Crabs n lobsters

Permittance of eating fish is in Quran and also has evidence from the hadith but Crabs, Lobsters, Crocodiles, Turtles, Lobsters are definately haraam and some of them are makrooh.

A Cautious approach is to avoid things that are Makrooh

From seafood, only fish is made Halaal for us. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Two carions are made Halaal for us; Fish and locust. ' (Mishkaat vol.2 pg.361). Fish is classified as a Vertebra. Crabs and lobsters are not vertebras but they belong to the Crustaece group, hence, not permissible.

Khan Sahib, yahaan Mufti ko kaun maan rahaa hai kay Yai un kaa fatwaa maanain gay. Yahaan to Ghair-Muqallid kee fauj jamaa hai.

Thanks Khanbaba bhai....your reference has furthered clarified the issue. I wont be touching Prawns and Lobsters from now on....I used to eat them out of ignorance...but now i won't

yaar tariq “L” khan sahab, saudis follow some mufti and some imam and according to that imam prawns and crabs are allowed, we already established in this thread that no imam is wrong.

so why is it wrong now all of a sudden? are the imam who allow crabs wrong? :confused:

Antumul, u quoted that anythin from the sea is permissable, all plants, animals living or dead, so am i right in saying in response to afro's question this means crabs etc are permissable to eat?

alfaz say khail? naheen bhai, all i am saying is that some schools of thought allow eating crabs and lobsters. so just do it if you want to, some very knowledgeable people were unable to declaer it was haram, how can we.

I agree with you (cherish these rare moments if you can, of me being in agreement with you. Is not going to happen very often)

In this thread, no one presented the absolute judgement of crab/lobster being haraam. Khanbaba said that its "Makrooh according to Hanafi". Makrooh means there is an element of doubt. Some think that its Haraam and some failed to prove that, so Hanafi's concluded right that element of doubt is there and called it Makrooh.

Hanafi's also believe that if it is Makrooh then it should be avoided just like we avoid Haraam. Its better to be safe than sorry. I dont see anything wrong with this philosophy

Thank you, my point from the beginning is that we can not categorically declare it haram because it is not declared as such by all standard schools of thought.

I agree. And I dont think that any one was pushing Hanafi Maslak on people here. Its just that no one else showed up to present other school of thoughts. I am keen to know about Hadith backing up other rulings about Crab/Lobster
