I’m involved in the student ambassador programme in college which means we go around promoting further education and our own area of studies which in my case is sayns! They’re trying to increase the number of students enrolling in the department of science. So we were brainstorming what fears school-leavers might have with regards to pursuing further education in science. The word “loner” came up quite often along with difficult, boring, unemployment, low wages etc etc… jeebus!
So I thought it would be interesting to hear what image of science (not medicine) and scientists do you have in mind?
People who are duped in research, who are into geeky conventions and those who write tend to have solitary lives or rough relationships. It may also be that the BO exhibiting, jumper wearing, spectacle wearing, living with mother, stuttering people have poor social skills and tend to be single they also tend to be scientists?
I like the idea of the Indiana Jones model ... although an archaeologist - which in terms of geekiness are quite high, he is still a bit of a hero, it's his alter-ego. Perhaps scientists are single during the day, only so they can hit the night hard partying ... then come back to their desks and fall asleep - when the Dean comes in the next morning sees the "hard working scientist fall asleep at his desk - stinking of BO" - no wonder he's got BO - spent the night in clubs.
Y’know, people like Einstein don’t really help disprove this stereotype image of scientists
Most saynsdaan I’ve worked with are quite social outside of the working hours. When you’re in the lab, you’re surrounded by machines (not people) and you have to focus on what you’re doing so its pretty darn quiet and lonely in there. We always have the radio turned on in there to keep the atmosphere a little bit lively. But outside the lab, they’re normal as everyone else! In comparison to medicice, yes we do start off on lower wages but it doesn’t take long to climb up the ladder and make some good monies so no they don’t live with their mommies at 40+. As for the hardcore geeks, well they’re found in every profession and they do like to keep to themselves.
dude, too many people pursue the sciences, it's not a diminishing department/field :D
We were shown figures from the 1990s to the 2000s and a decline (not major but apparent) in the number of students enrolling in science was clearly seen. Apart from that, it is the general attitude of school-leavers towards science that needs to change. It is not "impossible" as you'd hear most students say.
Nomi, what? Not being defensive at all! Ithay discussion ho rai haigi!

may be its due to bad teaching of science subjects in school? and the money definitly plays a role........
Yup school-leavers will apply for something that they most enjoyed in their school life and science isn’t always the top one on their list. I loved it but not many others.
As for money, I think graduates can start from 25,000 to 30,000 euros a year which may be lower than other fields but it isn’t bad.
I have lambi ghani zulfein, this was supposed to be you in 10 years. Ok fine you can have a little bit of hair:
