We were shown figures from the 1990s to the 2000s and a decline (not major but apparent) in the number of students enrolling in science was clearly seen. Apart from that, it is the general attitude of school-leavers towards science that needs to change. It is not "impossible" as you'd hear most students say.

but the decline could also be because there are new opportunities for people. new careers and degrees to explore...so that's not always a bad thing

I'm a scientist and I am not a loner - there were over 300 students in my uni classes - only about 15 in my Masters. But I am defo not a loner - I do like my alone time though - every now and then :)
