Scientific computing ?

octave or matlab, any one ?
any science-daan here ?

Have used matlab just a bit. Have no clue about octave

Re: Scientific computing ?

octave is just open source version of matlab.

Stay away from open source for any real work. Just my two cents

Re: Scientific computing ?

True.

Problem solved then ? :D

Re: Scientific computing ?

:D
I was wondering what kind of data people put it, if they analyse data.
Or what modules they use to do what kind of stuff.

Re: Scientific computing ?

If you are into octaves, I suggest you record some songs in voice gallery. matlab, we would like to listen to ur singing.

Problem solved?

Re: Scientific computing ?

I very strongly disagree with it. Pretty much all the emerging technologies in software are open source.

Re: Scientific computing ?

I agree with you.
But above software are about numerics, so no one can verify their accuracy, really.
So in this case one being commercial is being used by more organization and have more exposure in real life situations. Plus they have modules for real life situations which might arise during the work.
Other then that reason OpenSource all the way. OpenSourse is what is going to change the world

Re: Scientific computing ?

^ Great example of open source at work. Within the same post, c was replaced by s by an alert collaborator.

Re: Scientific computing ?

Opensource is open source. You have to trust the developer, there is no bench marking done, and there is no support or training available. You do have user forums to help you out, but really that is not a reliable way of getting official work done. I know in my industry, if we start using open spruce software, we will immediately lose the credibility in front of our customers.

Re: Scientific computing ?

Same here. Java, PHP, MySQL are all open source technologies.

Re: Scientific computing ?

While I do agree that open source is good I also believe that for business you always go for closed source since your customers might freak out if they find out that you are charging them X amount of money while using open source programs. There are some times when open source is better and some times when closed source is.

Re: Scientific computing ?

I would go with whatever technology makes sense to use for the given application unless required otherwise by the client.

Re: Scientific computing ?

Spoke like an engineer :ASA:
Boss in my humble experience only this fist thing I came upon where I have to match the results of commercial in order to verify open source.
There were things I read about like embedded firmware or cad tools, where open source have catching up to do.
Other then that open source rock!! Please be mind full almost all the big company them self sponsoring/starting open source projects.
I mean(the way open source people say) a couple hounder people can not compete with millions of developers.

Re: Scientific computing ?

I just used matlab in one of my statistics classes.

Re: Scientific computing ?

matlab erryday. octave is pretty powerful, there's another free matlab clone called scilab. depends on what you want to do. nothing is as comprehensive and well supported as matlab, but its got nothing other tools cant do.

Re: Scientific computing ?

Open source at work.

Re: Scientific computing ?

Matlab, the whole software is designed to process mulch-dimensional matrices. All state-space differential problems can be modeled. Besides textual coding, a graphical programming language much like function block diagram (FBD in PLC's) is included. Different tool-kits can be loaded with per-configured blocks in simulink.
Matlab also supports great number of data acquisition cards (DAQ) from National Instruments and Texas Instruments. Data from these cards can be sampled at variable rate, recorded and analyzed all within one software Matlab.
Hope this helps.
