The R Project for Statistical Computing is opensource and lots of (social) scientists use it. No issues have surfaced so far.

I don't understand open source. Linus for ex. What if one guy or gal deliberately messes up the code. And he is creative making it difficult to detect the bug.

They have the checking system. Developers code does not become part of distribution immediately. It goes to few steppes of developer who all send it to next level.
For example kernel changes in linux reach all the way to Linus TXXX(guy who created linux), to get approved.
How ever any one can change code for his own use any time, also can sell it to make profit.
Only condition is , when its sold you can not hide code, you still have to share.
