Even if the US can't gain complete control of Iran, it can still f**k it up real good. So if I were an Iranian leader, I would be scared of doing anything that might put American soldiers on my doorsteps.

It's all a function of how the other powers feel about it. If France or Russia decide no, then a shipment of more advanced AA weaponry would make things a lot more difficult for America.
This is exactly what happened in Lebanon. Israel found evidence of advanced Russian anti-tank weaponry being used...when the Russians were confronted they simply said "prove it"...i.e. deal with it.
It is no longer a uni-polar world. Was it ever? Open question...

One thing that must be understood about the nuclear club is that unless it's a tactical nuke, the only real targets of nukes are other members. Oddly enough, the only tolerable policy is MAD. Using nukes to force a failed policy will reek of aggression that the other powers would indeed feel threatened by.
I don't see the other powers supporting the wholesale destruction of Afghanistan...so long as that remains the case...nukes are out. That is, it's an absurd scenario...may as well claim the ability to conjure up Godzilla and have him stomp on everyone.
In any case, it's amazing how you consider that a viable option...

Nor are they willing to let America go all willy-nilly with the nukes. And that would be the real point, not that they have any interest in protecting Afghanistan.

Anyway, what do you think would happen if China dropped a single nuke on Taiwan? Not going to happen. For the same reason Russia didn't nuke Pakistan.
Playing the nuclear gambit shifts the balance of power in drastic ways...expect a drastic response...

But both Russia and China want stronger relations with USA than protect Afghanistan. Just look at the Vietnam War, both Russia and China abandonded North Vietnam in the Paris Peace Talks and forced it to seek a comprimise with USA and South Vietnam
Well Russian troops have managed to kill 250,000 Chechens and China's death toll is reaching 10,000 in Western China.
My point is that USA has a lot of faults but when you compare it to the Roman, Mongol or British Empires, it has been restraint than compared to others. If China and Russia do rise up to become superpowers and they have to deal with Islamic Terrorism like USA does, they will be extremely brutal about it.
Well the safety of Taiwan is protected by the most powerful Naval Force on the planet, the U.S. 7th Fleet based in Yokohama, Japan
While Russia has no desire to wage war with Pakistan. That Analogy doesnt make any sense
