Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

Are saris ever worn in everyday life in Pakistan? Are they worn as special occasion outfits ever? I would love to see pictures of saris worn in Pakistan. I am curious about the designs, fabric etc.

What about the sari blouses? Which designs are popular in Pakistan? In India I have seen a lot of sphaghetti straps and bustiers worn with saris on special occasions. For everyday plain blouses with sleeveless or the 3 inches above elbow sleeve lenght is popular.

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

You'll see older ladies wearing casual saris more in Karachi than in Lahore. Other than that, it's still a popular choice for formal wear. Liberal people will wear the more risque blouses, but the majority of people wear short sleeve blouses, and they'll wrap the sari so that not too much or no midriff is showing.

As far as materials, every type of material is used, but chiffon, silk jamawar and banarsi are the most popular. Sometimes, you can even find real Indian banarsi saris in the market, and people like those for the authenticity.

There are sari shops in every big city and designers also make them as well.

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

i blv its a formal thing in pakistan unlike common in india.

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

yes, they are worn in everyday life in pakistan in some households. In other households it might be worn only for formal ocassions. Unlike in India, blouses are fairly plain and simple due to cultural aspects of pakistan.

Are you really into sarees?.. Wear them in your everyday life?...or how ften u wear them?

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

^ Actually I’ve noticed that sari blouses have become more and more risque in Pakistan. When I was getting saris made, I had to force the tailor to keep the blouse a decent length. But a lot of people (even aunties  ) wear them backless, sleeveless, and very short. But you can get them made your own way.

I know for a while it was fashionable in Pak to put more design on the blouse and less on the sari itself. I think that’s still pretty popular. I love saris and the look they give. So elegant.

Please post some photos.

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

yes u r right. infact, a plain chiffon saree and a printed is i think a really cool combination. so u wear saris very often? and what is the case with our mom’s in this forum?.. do they wear saris pretty regularly?.. my mom loves wearing sarees even when she is goign out casually…at home, howver, she usually wears salwar kamiz… how is it with you girls’ moms?

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

i wear saree's on parties,,,i love chiffons ,and silk
the best is french chiffon,,,,wow so light and elegant,,,

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

yes, my nani and dadi wearr these starched cotton saris on a daily basis..and man, do they lo0k elegant and beautiful!!!!

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

No in Pakistan, shalwar kameez is it for everyday wear..
saris are usually worn for special occasions..i’ve never seen a bride in Pakistan wear it (though i knw of one grl who wore a red sari for her valima here in NY)..

I don’t think the general population who does wear saris for special occasions wear the tube top/bustier type stuff (not counting the ultra liberal/elite type ppl)

My dads bringing me some saris from Pak  I hope they come out nice :halo:

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

you must be talking about Lahore, then…in kaarchi, you can see many people wearing saris as everyday wear..but offcourse those saris are not banarasi or chiffon saris but simple ones, mainly cotton saris..but yes, a lot of people wear it on daidly basis.

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

Well, i'm from Lahore n thas wat the majority wear.. maybe its diff in Khi then

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

yeah...because in karachi many people ( not today's generation but only nanis and dadis) wear saris on daily basis...and the others would wear one occasionally. so it's not very uncommon

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

true.. but i guess in karachi even the generation which is that of our parents wear sarees quite regularly, even on daily basis. i know qute a few of aunts who are of somewhere 45-50 wear saris on daily basis. even my mom who belongs to the same age group wears sarees quite regularly.

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

Yeah I really like saris. I like all textiles. There is something so sensual about the silky feel of fine fabric!

I do not wear them often (except perhaps to a party or something) and all of mine are mainly stored away in muslin wrapped bundles in my cedar closet. I do however buy them as a serious collector. Some people collect art... I collect saris!

I have saris from pretty much ever region in India showcasing thier specialty saris (banarasi from Varanasi, Tangai from bengal, parsi gharas etc etc). I think I have about 150 saris. I should count one day!

What are the specialities in Saris in Pakistan?

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

I don't like saris and no more when muslims women wear them badly I mean very short blouses and stylish !! I think it's a cultural traditionnal wear of our neighbour why adopt it when we have our own cultural wear ie shalwar kameez ?!
I don't understant people who wear it cos' it's a symbol of liberalism, freedom and very intellectual upper class symbol huuh

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

I never heard of it as being a symbol of liberalism, freedom or the intellectual upper class, not that intellect and the upper class are mutually inclusive. They are just another dress option and a very elegant one at that :)

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

Saris are most common in Sindh due to the large muharjir population, and after sindh sarees are most common in panjab due to panjabs close cultural ties with India. Outside of those 2 pronices youll never see a saree, only shalwar kameez

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

^ When I've been to Pakistan, I've never ever seen anyone in Sindh wear a sari in casual circumstances. I've only seen them being worn at weddings....

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

I’m sure with that view point you would never wear a lehnga as that is Indian, pants or skirts, coats or blouses as those are western, aabayas or jilbabs as they are middle eastern…

Re: Saris and sari blouses in Pakistan

^ Exactly. Any clothing can be Islamic as long as it covers the necessary parts and meets the requirements laid out in the Quran and sunnah....
