I always thought that saris were draped a certain way and thus would look “sexier” depending on the how the wearer actually drapes the sari…
most recently watching a hindi film bewafa i saw kareena put on a sari with a very tight petticoat, tightly fitting with a bit of mermaid style, then she wrapped the sari…
I was wondering if anyone knew about this? should i have all my petticoats made tight to give a more “shapely” look under chiffon saris?
i dont know about petty coats but i was told to wear my saris really really tight at the waist to get a good shape. I have my saris ready-made or sewn by the tailor and i was told to hook it up really really tight.
^wearing your sari tight really helps give the shape but wearing a tight petticoat might be better as long as you can walk in it properly because a pouffy petticoat might make your bum look bigger even if the waist is really tight. do you know what i mean?
I have tried saris on but never actually worn one to an event. And ofcourse i got plenty of them made for the wedding Since we are on the topic, i too have a question : I got all my saris ready-sewn. And they are so easy to wear but do you tuck in the pleats or what??I am confused.
If you mean that once you hook the sari, wrap it around do you tuck/roll over the top portion of the sari at your waist? Yes, i do, it makes it not look like you had a pre-made sari plus it looks authentic...
i know this is an old topic but I came across it n could not resist posting...
i do happen to consider myself an expert on sari wearing since I wear them every damn day to college.
neways, amelie, you don't really need to have tight fitting petticoat to get a shapely sari. In fact you don't have to tie it really tight around the waist either. The shape comes from pulling the fabric tightly as you pull it around to make the pallu. Personally, I wear unstitched saris.
One recommendation is that try getting hooks on the petticoat instead of azar band. That way you don't have a bulge where you tie it.
In fact, I say dont get a tight fitting petticoat because its going to be uncomfortable and limit walking.

Yeah tight petticoats are in fashion nowadays. Tight petticoats make you look skinny and more shapely like you said. Also no puffyness. I have tight petticoats for all my sarees

have fun trippin all over yourselves :) petticoats? such a victorian word. reminds of the time we laughed in class about women that broke their rib cages wearing tight clothes in the victorian era. i say u wear nothing underneath.
sighs! saris...another dress designed to make life harder for women.
love-hate-relationship.
hey ira, i didn't know u were gettin married...but congratulations anyhow...how are the preparations goin...and u'll definately have to show us pictures of u in ur saris.
Oh yeah back to the topic.....I WANT A SARI 2 (but nowhere to wear it to!)
seriously, don't go with tight petticoats. A little fitting is ok but not tight, its going to make your life a living hell. You won't be able to walk properly. To avoid puffiness, choose light material such as cotton for the petticoat. That way it doesn't look bunchy AND you can walk.
I am in the army so I know about wearing sari, Just pull the material properly and it won't look like you're wearing a bag. When making a sari choose material that has a good fall, such as georgette or silk. Avoid heavy material, it'll just make you look bigger. And when going to drape the pallu, women pull tiightly on the top of the material but forget the bottom. Pull the bottom side as well when draping and you'll get a lovely shape to your sari.
Another trick, when wearing a sari, the more falls you make, the better the sari looks. And make the sure the falls are more towards the center for the best fall. Its easier to carry fewer falls and on the side but it does not come across as well.
If you want, the ultra perfect shapely sari, go for the "rings". Will explain those in a little later when I have some time
