Sarees

Is a sari fitting different than that of a shalwar kameez/lengha?
My inlaws gave me two saris but they are unstitched even though they had the size, because they said that a sari’s fitting is different than a shalwar kameez..:konfused:

Re: Sarees

yes it is because the shalwar is bigger if u take the zarban ore elastic out but they could have ised the lenhga if it was a fit one

Re: Sarees

well you dont actually need to stitch a sari itself other than adding on the fall at the bottom and stitching the blouse. if its too long for you when you wrap it, you just tuck more into the petticoat to compensate. theres also different lengths, i think- a 5 yard one, a 6 yard one, and a 7 yard one? i think that depends on how much you weigh, i.e. the thinner you are, the less fabric you need cos its not wrapping around too much.

Re: Sarees

Get the saree stitched as an "automatic" one, where the fall etc is stitched and all you have to do is hook it..trust me...much better than wrapping it around all the time. And if you have a good tailor do it, he/she will make sure that it is perfect for your body.
I agree with your inlaws, the blouse is much smaller in length, much wider at the neckline, so it is totally upon you how long you want the blouse or what neckline you want it to be.
Girl, get them sarees stitched asap! sarees should be a staple in every girl's closet!

Re: Sarees

Well my dad got me 3 saris from Pak, but the blouses kinda fit weird :bummer:

Re: Sarees

Sara, just have someone fix the blouses for you, no?

Re: Sarees

lots of plp are making new designs shalwar kamiz out of it but the lenth different from shalwarkamiz,

Re: Sarees

sorry.....but anyone that wears a "stitched" sari is just lazy and is proving to me that they don't know how to make simple pleats. amateurs is what they are.....they don't deserve outfits as versatile as saris.

not only does stitching a sari make it near impossible to properly iron out creases from the pleats, it takes away from the numerous styles in which you can actually wear it.

stitch it and you are suddenly restricted to one or maybe two ways to wear it.
leave it open and the combinations are virtually endless.

sometimes a long palloo is in and sometimes a short one. get the sari stitched and you are now restricted to wearing it only the way it has been stitched....either long or short palloo. why waste a perfectly adaptable outfit like that?

sometimes you want to wear it gujrati style with the palloo coming over your shoulder and resting on your chest rathar than hanging down your back. stitch the sari and you can't go from one to the other style.

sometimes you want to have extra length on the palloo to place on your head if the occassion demands. stitch the sari and you can't do this unless you plan it this way.

Re: Sarees

i agree with muzna… belt wali sari is a no no… u may as well not wear one then… it looks hideous and takes all the grace that a sari is known for, OUT.

learn to pleat women… its not that hard.. just takes some time…

:jano: sari!

Re: Sarees

i agree with muzna too, i used to have a stiched one but once i tried the other one it just looked so much better!

Re: Sarees

So the pleats stay secure with a big safety pin? My only concern would be for the sari to fall off if some kid accidenly puls on it or if i were sitting down and trying to get up, the pleats come loose.

I jsut need some good tips so i will feel brave enough to unstich my saris :D

Re: Sarees

Re: Sarees

Well, yes I am lazy, and no i don’t know how to make simple pleats. I’ve never worn a sari, so yes I am an amateur.

Re: Sarees

i doubt that post by muzna was aimed at u sara  hehe..

just practice .. get someone to help u.. it took me a couple of tries, but i THINK i have it right now :cb:

and yes… IRA .u fold it into ure petticoat and then use safety pins to hold it in place.

Re: Sarees

I’m sure it was :snooty:
anyway, so i was asking abt hte saari blouse..that’s supposedly different than the kameez..
I have 5 saris, and nowhere to wear them :bummer:

Re: Sarees

Im a Sari convert.

My first sari I wore a few months back had a ready made pleat with it to help me tie it up cause I didnt know a jack bout tying saris.

When i brought it home, it just looked blah.

So i sat and spent an hour undoing the pleats then googled up sari tying techniques and images of women wearing saris.

The tying techniques were all complicated but the Pics of women in saris were very helpful

Once you learn where the pallu is and what side the pleats fall its a piece of cake.

I tied it myself and went to the wedding and got so many compliments on the Sari itself.
I was glad I had tied it the traditional way then going with ready made pleats cause I was among indian women who are masters at Saris.

Here is a pic

The blouse is the only thing that needs to be stitched cause it needs to be very very fitting and it also needs to be desgined and stitched in contrast with the actual sari.

If its a plain sari then obviously you can get away with a elaborate blouse but if its banarsi or heavy kaam wali then a plain one is enough.

I love halter neck blouses

Re: Sarees

Sara saree blouses are different from kameez's in the sense that they r much more fitted, body hugging to be exact. A sari blouse would be measured pretty mch the same way as you would take a bra measurement and fit as snuggly too. Loose blouses look awful and untidy so if the blouses u got don't fit you properly just get them altered and if they are solid coloured blouses just go with new ones.

Re: Sarees

I never knew how to wear a saree until I got married and I had to wear it every so often, being Bengali its a traditional outfit. I had to put safetypins all over and a big one through the petticoat into the pleats that way it stays in place, but since then (3 and a half years on) I have never felt that insecure about my saree falling to bits, it surprisingly stays in its place. But you have to make sure the petticoat is tight enough, not so tight that it restricts blood flow but enough so you are certain it won't slide down.

I have problems with blouses because I have big busts so I make sure that I buy a saree knowing the blouse will fit me or is at least adjustable, not just because I like the way the saree looks. Be sure to wear your heels before you get the saree on so it falls nicely.

Nowadays falls come stitched on the sarees and even come with a second blouse and matching petticoat.

By the way, stitched sarees are a no-no, it kills the elegance and sophistication of the real thing. It looks rubbish anyway.

Remember the more yards on a saree the more pleats you can have, more styles you can wear it, more blouse piece from it and finally it will get around big people like myself and sara, not that sara is big as me anyway :)

Re: Sarees

This is me in a saree couple of years ago. I have worn it with pleats across the chest and aachal. You might want to wear the aachal a bit longer than what I had on that pic. The longer the better it looks.
