The problem thus, as Faisal points out, is our double standard. We'll make fun of Hindus and Sikhs. We'll spit on Jews and Christians. Then we'll all laugh. When someone makes fun of Muslims we are quick to demand apologies and respect, but when it comes to disrespecting other cultures we have no problem. If we're going to stop "Paki" jokes or "Rag Head" jokes we better make sure we stop "Sardar" jokes. Or even "Pathan" jokes.
Yup! Too many double standards... and then they respond with, "well it's a Pakistani forum, if u want to hear good stuff abt India, go to an Indian forum." errr okay..unfortunately it's only the most arrogant, idiotic people who can dish something but b*tch and whine when they recieve the same in return...

i think most sikh jokes are in bad taste (i don't read jokes here anyway), but it's not pakistanis alone who like to have a laugh at their expense. insofaras i know, indian media quite frequently portrays sikhs in a stereotypical fashion, which i think is worse than some silly jokes. anyhow, i feel that people can laugh at other groups (or themselves) without ridiculing or stereotyping them. but you have to be careful.
i'm sure most people have heard this joke. i hope english and american men will not be offended. :)
'a blond lived on the top floor of a building. her room caught fire and she had to jump out of the window. she was caught by the hands of an American man who said, "i'll only save you if you have sex with me." she said no, and he dropped her. Then an English man caught her. he said the same thing, and once again she said no, and he dropped her. the third time a muslim man caught her and before he could say anything, she said, "please save me I'll do anyting. I'll even have sex with you. He said ‘ASTAGHFIRULLA’ and dropped her.'
btw, making fun of important personalities of any faith should not be allowed.
In a gathering of Sikhs under Big Ben, a sardar got up & announced publicly:
"From now on we will not be known as the race who turn idiots after 12midnight...!!!"
The crowd amazed, asks the sardar, "How is that possible"
He looks at big ben & just as it strikes 12midnight, he jumps up & holds the hour hand & proclaims victoriously - This is how we do it baby, we stop the time...!!!
HKS - I hope u didnt post this post after 12midnight...jus kidding.
You (in general - can be anyone) can make fun of Punjabis, southerners, Muslims (not the religion though), or myself, I'll be okay with that. Jokes are jokes. Although I do agree that most of us (read it as Muslims or desis or whatever) have double standards. As others have said, it's all fun and games when we are poking fun at others but as soon as the tables are turned, we get all offended and demand that jokes must be stopped.
Also, jokes are always about SOMEONE (individual or a group). If they weren't, they wouldn't be jokes. Jokes are on Punjabis, Sindhis, Pathans, Blonds, Sikhs, Polish, and many other groups and ethnicities. Someone will always be a target of jokes and they are all in good humor (except the ones where obvious insults take place). That's why they are called **JOKES.
yar it depends how defensive you are - mentally
It takes a heart of a lion to laugh at yourself…
The problem is with the hypocrites, who themselves can get away with murder
but if I even THINK of killing a fly - They will pounce on me for Fly-slaughter
Perhaps the sikh on the forum can let us know what they think of it? Joke has to be appreciated by both parties involved , if it isn't then i guess we are being nothing but insensitive?
A molvi looking smilie was removed because mullah abadi found it offensive even though it wasn't targeting them, just the jahil mullah approach but they don't see anything wrong with sikh jokes, one after another.......just some general observation…..
Anyway like Croquet said that people posting jokes should make sure they will appreciable by everyone... people just keep your limits and enjoy each others sense of humor :)
Why do we close abusive posts everywhere but the Joke section? Is the Joke section fair game to make racist jokes?
My complaint is with the countless number of Sardar jokes. Jokes that have been spun around into mocking tales. For instance, one member conveniently turned a Blond joke into a Sardar joke - for the sole reason a Sardar is funnier to laugh at in Desi circles. Step back for a second and think twice before you decide to perpetuate a century old and highly disrespectful stereotype.
Yes, it's true that poking fun at Sikhs is a national past-time for us Pakistanis, but this is 2007. I'm sorry I take issue with this. Really. But I'm looking at the bigger picture. I'm contextualizing all this in a setting racist joke tellers ignore - it's a moment in our own history, as Muslims, that we ask people for understanding. It's a time when we ask other people to respect us. What message do we put out when we rally to demand respect and tell racist jokes in between?
Are we, as a group struggling for respect, really doing the right thing when we make fun of Sikhs?
Dude, this is a PAKISTANI forum. You said that sardar jokes are stereotypes in Pakistani circles, so isn't GupShup a Pakistani circle? I don't see anything wrong with sardar jokes on a Pakistani forum. Do you think anyone would give a crap if a joke racist to pakistanis was requested to be removed from an indian forum? hskhan you have a right to voice your opinion but you can't just request to take those jokes off. Enjoy being a Pakistani!
Yes. It is. And because it is such you should respect Pakistani Sikhs, Pakistani Hindus, Pakistani Christians etc.
I enjoy being a Pakistani. But being a Pakistani does not mean I poke fun at a group that has long been mocked. Infact, poking fun at Sikhs is unpatriotic. The type of Pakistani I enjoy being, is the type which recognizes I am OBLIGATED to respect and honor the rights of minorities.
Also, we should know full well how it feels like to be persecuted against. It’s not a very nice thing to do onto others you would’nt want done to yourself.
