I’m curious to see what people think about Salman Butt taking over as the new Pakistan Captain when the season starts in fall 2007. A few TV networks in Pakistan are talking about his credentials as Captain - He’s young, talented, has Captained the Under 17, Under 19, National Academy teams as well as his home team of Lahore. He’s done it pretty well, and his batting has not suffered at all.
Personally, I think it would be an excellent move. Just like Smith for South Africa in 2003, Smith wasnt even a member of the team and had only played 2 tests before he was handed the Captaincy ahead of Kallis, Gibbs, Boucher and Co. And look at the results…
Salman Butt as Captain would mean that Pakistan would have a young captain who would be in his prime in the 2011 World Cup and even beyond. And plus…it would perhaps also lead to more young blood in the ODI side…which would improve the fielding, running between the wickets, the enthusiasm and the intensity on the field.
I think Yousef, Younis, Shoaib Akhtar and Danish Kaneria should only be playing test cricket from now on. Yousef is a poor fielder and a poor runner and I think he can extend his career if he only plays tests, same goes for Shoaib, and as far as Younis Khan goes - he has never won a game for Pakistan in ODI…he’s not a big-occasion player and he can be more useful in tests, letting a young player take his spot in the ODI team .
His technique isent all that bad....anyone who gets 100 against Australia in Australia isent a bad player. As far as his getting caught at slip goes, that only started happening just around the England series, which is when he had a dip in form and lost his place. He doesent have the same technical faults that Imran Farhat has for instance, Farhat doesent move his feet and drives forcefully with his head in the air and is basially a walking slip-practice machine. Butt on the other hand has a very decent technique and isent as vulnerable as Farhat.
For that matter, no Pakistani batsman has a 'excellent' technique or one without flaws. Younis Khan's technique is no better either, he thinks he can pull and hook without getting into line, and ends up giving catching practice each time you bowl a short one at him...Give Yousef a full length in swinger and watch the stumps go for a walk....(ask Irfan Pathan).
Since we are being completely nonsensical, .....

He did get to play for next one and hald season based on that performance, in which it was discovered that he has some serious flaws, lack of confidence against short pitch bowling+ Ball out side off stump + his over shuffling towards off stump which is causing problem with over pitched ball at middle and leg stump on which he kept on getting out LBW or bowled even caught down the legside( if i am not mistaken i had this discussion with saby during 2005-06 season about butt's problem with full pitched ball on middle and leg...

If you mean Eng series from 2006, then what about his dismissLS in Eng series in Pak, being Irfan's favorite batsman in 2006 and SL series???

It is debatable, infact very debatable..the only thing that goes in Butt's favor, is the fact that Farhat has been given ANOTHER whole season to prove his worth in which he didnt do it the way it was expected. So maybe now its Butt's turn to dis appoint pakistani fans.
If I remember correctly, there was a time in the late 90's when the Pakistan Team had 5 or 6 players who had been captain at some point (Akram, Waqar, Anwar, Rashid, Sohail, Miandad)
Now they can't seem to find ONE player who can be made captain.
Reminds me of the time when England got Chris Cowdrey from nowhere and made him the captain...or NZ making Lee Germon (sp?) the captain when he wasn't even in the team.
shoaib malik would be way better. everyone has seen him leading his team in Pakistan and he did a good job. Razzaq would be better than Salman too but he may not be able to keep the discipline, I guess.

That sounds funny. If we had negative scores in cricket, his batting would surely have suffered. A batsman scoring noughts cannot be affected by anything :D ...
I think the only option thinking about long term effect is Shoaib Malik, if Younis khan runs into problem, ( which more than likely he will as there are people like Afridi and Akhter around, plus with name of razaaq being mentioned, that will make him feel like Mr someone now) all these factors combine i think younis will run into problems handling team. But for the moment it has to be Younis (as a safe bet) and if PCB wants to** make a bold decision then it can be Malik**
