my mom cooks salan in the morning well like at 11 and on weekends I have to wake up smelling that crap! I HATE and I mean HATE that smell n it makes me sick, I wanna throw up all day and I cant enjoy a single meal. It doesnt happen on weekdays cuz I am out before the crack of dawn and very proud of it. Anyways, how do I stop it?
Our house is pretty big, my rooms upstairs and I dont know how the smell gets up here but i want a way to stop it!
Re: Salan smell
block airpassage FROM your room.. but make sure u have ample air circulation for pushing it out..
also, near the ventilation/door/other forms, install a medium-duty (for large rooms) "air purifier" (also called ionizer, depending on its hepa class)
i heavily smoke sheesha late at night, thats what i do to isolate it..
Re: Salan smell
either ask her to stop cooking salan or u stop living there. :P
Re: Salan smell
^ I wanna move out n live in Greece but then their food smells too ![]()

Re: Salan smell
only the food smells in greece?
rolleyes:
Re: Salan smell
then get the high-capacity one (industry kitchens one) and install it by the cooking range.. (secondary initiative is to isolate the source if u cant isolate your atmosphere)
Re: Salan smell
TJ I know theres lots of homeless orphans who would love to wake up in a home to the smell of their mother cooking food.. ![]()

Re: Salan smell
Agar khud saalan baanao tau pataa laggaY naa :P
Re: Salan smell
We keep all the windows open while cooking and even after cooking. Then we light some strong scented oils and it clears out the smell fast. I use the ones from the Body Shop, Satusuma oil and Tobacco Flower. You only need a few drops and the scent spreads through the house.
Re: Salan smell
I like mehnaz's idea the best of scented oils! But how do u keep the windows opened when its like 6 degrees out?
Haha thats wat i hate about cooking, you end up smelling that
Sara I love my mom n her cooking. Its bhunnawa chicken i cant stand, i HATE the taste, I HATE the smell and I HATE thinking about it
Re: Salan smell
Febreeze is great also it keeps the clothes and furniture fresh smelling after they get hit by the salan smell. As Mehnaz said body shop oils are amazing, Mandarin Peel and satsuma have a great orangy smell and a few drops on a burner with a tea lite does wonders immediately. ALso ask mom to keep the kitchen exhaust on and open the window nearest the kitchen for ventillation.
Re: Salan smell
OMG i LOVE bhuna wa chicken !!!
Maybe you should smell my mothers’ ![]()
That sucks if u start smellin like salan.. then u get the housewife smell ![]()
Re: Salan smell
YEs...we had this problem, then my mom started lighting scented candles, and *THEY WORK. *Trust me.
Re: Salan smell
all that bhuna hua chicken talk is making me hungry :(
Re: Salan smell
You don’t have to open the windows completely, even if you open it halfway, that would be pretty good. We only keep the front room and kitchen windows open, not all the windows in the house. Also, Febreeze is another great alternative, but the scented oils works fine in our home. We tried the Glade scented candles and they were pretty lousy … which is why we stick to the strong oils from TBS.
Re: Salan smell
I have an aunt who always smells like cooked onions. I think she uses an unusually large amount of them in her salans. It attaches itself into her sweaters or her hair or something. This embarassing situation can be avoided by opening a window while cooking, keeping an exhaust fan on, lighting some scented candles and incense. I think the smell of salan rises for some reason. So keep all windows open. In my teens I've woken up many a morning to the sound of a pressure cooker and smell of salan. But it just made me hungry.
Re: Salan smell
vanilla essance, light it up near cooking..
Re: Salan smell
TJ, ask your mom to lit a scented candle near the stove while cooking and trust me there won't be any odor in the house. My mom always does that and it works pretty good, you can never tell if she is cooking in the kitchen.
Re: Salan smell
best thing is make sure the door linking the kitchen to the rest of the house is closed and the outside door to the kitchen is wide open, and if the kitchen is under your bedroom... then make sure your bedroom is window is closed.
also open the upstairs landing window.. to keep fresh air circulating upstairs.
although the cooking of food smells lovely.. i hate being around it when im in my uniform or i hate going anywhere smelling like a curry :(
Re: Salan smell
