**Inzamam has matured as skipper: Imran Khan **

Karachi, April 20, 2005

Pakistan cricket legend Imran Khan on Wednesday said Inzamam-ul-Haq had matured as skipper during the tough cricket tour of India and helped his young side meet the challenge by his own example.

“For me the high point of the series was Inzamam’s captaincy from the front and Sourav Ganguly’s failure to do the same for India,” Imran said.

The 53-year-old Imran had severely criticised Inzamam’s captaincy skills after Pakistan’s 3-0 rout in Australia earlier this year.

“I had said that he did not lead from the front in Australia. But in India he looked more involved and captaincy seemed to have matured and improved him as a batsman as well,” said Imran.

Ranked underdogs before the tour, Pakistan surprised critics by drawing a three-match Test series 1-1 with a come-from-behind win in the third Test at Bangalore and then upstaged India 4-2 in the one-day series on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Inzamam stood out both as captain and batsman, notching a brilliant 184 at Bangalore and capping his 100th Test with a win.

“Inzamam doesn’t realise his ability as a batsman. I have been saying that he is the best batsman in the world for the past ten years,” Imran said.

“Inzamam is probably the greatest match winner of Pakistan cricket as a batsman, much more than any of his contemporary batsmen,” said Imran, who launched Inzamam as a 22-year-old during Pakistan’s World Cup triumph in 1992.

Inzamam’s 21st hundred in Bangalore was the 16th time his century had contributed to a Pakistani win.

Imran also praised vice-captain Younis Khan’s batting.

“The other difference was Younis coming at number three. He changed the Bangalore Test with his double hundred and gave a solution to Pakistan’s number three problems,” said Imran, tipping Younis as a future captain.

Younis overcame a poor batting and fielding performance in the drawn first Test at Mohali to hit a century in the second Test at Kolkata, which Pakistan lost.

He then propped up the tourists’ batting with an epic 267 and a brilliant unbeaten 84 at Bangalore.

“Pakistan lost a home series to India last year primarily because they did not have a good number three batsman then,” said Imran, referring to Pakistan’s one-day and Test defeats against their long-time rivals last year.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

If Inzi had been playing like an opener or first down, he would have 30 100's by now. Inzi has 80 fifties most of them are around 72-88 runs not out. Inzi is much better than Tendi guys all the way.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

I don’t think anyone stopped him from opening. Tht’s his choice where he wants to bat. Can’t go around and start comparing on things like this…both these guys are completely different runs, with a hunger to score runs..that should rest the argument..

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Class and results don't always go together. Inzi is a good player but when you see Sachin in full flow, you realize what a criketing stroke is.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

^ True, class is good for those commercials.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Then he should just stay in the nets and not venture out…

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Yes, it did Saeed Anwar did, Aamir Sohail did…

Look I know and I accept Tendulkar as very talent guy, he is inpiring a living legend and so are others in their era. If you look what Inzi has done day in day out from age 22 World Cup '92 to 36 India Vs. Pakistan series both Test and One-day. This is something else consistency, Tendi does not have that right now and for a long time…on that basis I am saying that Inzi is better because he is been consistant for a long time and is also a match-winner '92 WC semi-final to '05 game 4 India vs Pak…

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Even I can hit beautiful cricket strokes in my gali. An international cricketer should be able to get the job done. The “beauty of his strokes” is the lamest excuse people give me for convincing me to believe that Tendulkar is the best batsman in the world. Really.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Why are you guys comparing the 3rd and 5th best players South Asia has produced.?

You should be comparing the top 2. Dravid and Miandad :)

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Talking of bety of stroke, then the most beautiful stroke player i have watched in cricket was Carl Hooper(the west indian)

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

…Or David Gower…or Zaheer Abbas. That’s my point. Many beautiful strokemakers in the world, but there are few who get the job done consistently and are labelled as “great batsmen”. Steve Waugh was not the most flamboyant strokemaker in the world, but he was a great batsman because he scored when the team needed him the most. In Sachin’s case, the term is misused. In fact, abused.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

INZAMAM WAS, IS & will ALWAYS BE the BEST cricketer in the world :mash:

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Well we really love to tear tendulkar down, don't we?Every player has shortcomings and if a person is bent on finding faults i dare say he can find faults in everything.I would love to see sachin win "more" matches in crunch situations but that is the only complaint apart from the fact that he has given up his natural flambuoance which set him apart from the rest of the pack.
What I really find unfortunate is most of the people here missing no opportunity to insult and bring the man down, even giving most stupid reasons. What's the reason, apart from being an Indian that is.C'mon give credit where it's due.How many guys have stood firm against the likes of Akram,Waqar,Imran,Qadir after being hit on the head in the first test at 16?(most of us would have gone back to mummy)Whom did the Aussies consider biggest thorn in their side(until Laxman became a bigger thorn)?Who scored 110 out of a team total of 200 at Perth at age 18?(and what is the record of other big guns at perth?)Who does Mcgrath and Warne consider the only one who has dominated them? The list is endless. And the fact is when he wasn't involved in too many close matches coz when he used to click the match would not remain close at all.Of course there will be occasions when he will score big and India still loses, but doesn't that happen with most players? Also test matches are won by bowlers and India never had a very penetrative attack.so to blame India's inability to win matches on Tendulkar is very unfair.
The purpose of my post is not to compare Sachin with Inzi or any other player, which will be very unfair to both. Both are great in their own right.I am just trying to say that he is not as bad a player as he's made out to be.Most of the people in their heart of hearts would wish he played for their country. Most of the Aussies do.At the moment I feel he's on decline and Lara has stolen a march over him but he's 32,an age which is considered to be when a player is at his best with a perfect mix of youth and experience.Let's see how he comes back and hopefully he starts playing like his old self for the pleasure of cricket lovers all around the globe.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

There shouldn't be any doubt about the class of tenulkar. But I guess the thread is related to INZI and TENDI comparision and not class. Alot of cricket pundits say that the real player is the one who plays in pressure situations and delivers. Now tell me who should we rate high? Inzi has won countless matches for us and Tendi unfortunately hasn't, specially in the last 4-5 years. And this is not me, this is on the record and this is what cricket experts are saying.
I was trying to figure why some indian fans are so touchy about tendi. I think the reason is he is an over rated player in India (probably not now anymore), player like dravid i believe is more better than tendi but it is not his fault that tendi showed his class in an era when indian team were in desperate need of a player like him, and from then onwards media and people in india made him a bhagwan.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Well I did mention first up I am not comparing Tendi-Inzi.And if you read the last few posts carefully, they are not comparing either.Again to the argument that Inzi has won many matches.he sure has.but so has tendulkar. And in a lot of those matches he(inzi) didn’t play a lone hand.A lot of other players performed especially the bowlers. He played in an era when paki attack boasted some great bowlers.50’s and 60’s dont win too many matches unless some other players have made contributions too,be it afridi, yoyo, anwar, sohail. The matches Tendulkar did win,he won on his own.most of the 90’s he was a one-man army.
And to the argument that he is only an Indian media hype, ask urself sincerely if that is the whole truth. Is he considered average player by the rest of the world media??? He’s the only non-aussie player whose biographies written by foreign authors you can find here in book stores.it’s not a question about being touchy but just putting things in perspective.A touchy person wouldn’t rate Lara above tendulkar(i wouldn’t mention Dravid coz he’s Indian),so don’t give lame reasons. If you wanna see touchy people, just open a thread rating any other player above Inzi or any paki player and watch. Or are they more touchy when Tendulkar is praised???I wonder

P.S You may find this column by Mcgrath interesting reading.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

Well first of all the thread is tendulkar vs. inzi, so it has to be their comparison, otherwise people should open separates threads for praising inzi or tendi. As far as inzi didn’t playing a lone hand and bowlers performing along with him, I agree, but then again when we discuss inzi match winning efforts, we should not consider the bowling performances in those matches and just need to focus on performances of paki batsmen. Believe me there has been countless matches in both test and ODI’s where paki bowlers did an awesome job but batsmen screwed up. But in the recent past inzi has played a role of a rock in the batting line. As far as matches where India won in 90’s due to tendi one man show, besides tendulakr class it was due to the fact that India were highly dependent in him due to the lack of quality batsmen in Indian side and secondly because of media hype and that’s why I said that he became a god or you can call him an overrated player. I remember countless matches where tendi use to come as an opener or one down and as soon as he uses to get out, crowd use to leave the stadium, I agree it was partly due to the fact that there weren’t quality players in the side at that time but that didn’t mean that they were unable to deliver. It was like, oppositions playing against tendi. Due to that lack of trust and encouragement from public and media, Indian team suffered a lot in 90’s. And even now the after effects can still be seen. Quality player like, dravid still are not getting the due credit and respect. Talented players like yuvraj and kaif has to come at 6 and 7 positions due to these man made gods like tendulkar and ganguly who think that their position in cemented in the side forever due to their past performances.

Again I would like to say that tendi is one of the best player Indian cricket has ever produced but problem arises when people treat him as the cricketing god, Yes, he was great but he now lacks the touch when he once had. By the way, the article which you posted is a 3 year old article. In my previous post I said that I am comparing both players’ performance in last 4-5 years. And again it’s not me; it’s even experts like shastri and manjerkar and media who openly commented this fact several times during the recently concluded series, that tendi chokes when it really matters. Same people have also accepted about inzi that how many times this man has performed for Pakistan in crunch situations.
As far as your comment on rating any other player over inzamam, let me tell you something, for some reason poor inzamam has been one of the biggest underrated player in cricket.

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

you cannot really compare a middle order batsman with an opener, certainly more skill and technique is required to face the new ball, but i would say they are pritty much in the same class or probably tendu marginly betta, but they are the two hishest scorers in ODI so you cannot really pick one as a winner .....................

Re: Sachin V/s Inzi : Who is better?

My original point was that some people are bent on declaring Tendulkar being worthless during whole of his career, thus the old article.I agree that people in India tend to take hero-worshipping to absurd levels and no person has a birth-right for selection in the national team. But C'mon as badly as he may be playing now,he certaily was a gem.In fact I would like to see him dropped firstly to prove that he has to perform like old again and secondly to fire him up.(and he deserves it judging by his past performances and his own standards). But C'mon as badly as he may be playing now,he certaily was a gem.I also agree that players like Inzi and Dravid are underrated.I am a big fan of both Inzi and Dravid and would like them to see getting more recognition.
