Re: Saat Laraa Haar
khattichic:
my family is hyderabadi (from very “nawabi” lineage), and my sister and I both inherited our mother’s heirloom jewelry from her wedding when we got married… saat lara haar, jaravi lacha, karan phool & jhoomar…it’s all pearl, emeralds & pholki…so regal & beautiful!! at the time i got married (13 yrs ago, mA!), of course, I felt it was all OTT & “dated”, but now that my mom is no longer alive (passed away 3 yrs ago) I realize how precious these are!! i keep everything in the safe deposit box at the bank, of course! my sister and i have decided that since her daughter (19 yrs old) is the only girl grandchild (i have 3 boys!), she will got all these heirloom sets when she marries, NO WAY we are passing them to bahus..who KNOWS where they will end up…lol!
Yes, I myself am a bahu, and actually, my mother in law completely agreed with my sister and I that these heirlooms should stay with my mom’s nawasi as she was the first born grandchild in our family, is the ONLY girl, and was the light of my mother’s life. My sister and I are VERY luck that our husband’s are VERY generous and we both, mashallah have amassed quite alot of jewelry, both eastern & western, throughout our marriages. We’ve both decided that whatever we recieved from our husbands & inlaws will go straight to our future bahus, (i have 3 sons, she has 1), but these precious sets that were our mother’s will only pass to my niece.
I don’t see anything negative or wrong, or sad with that. In fact, I myself was gifted an exquisite, antique karra, by my taya & taayi ma dating back to the Pre-Partion, when my taaya was given this as gift from someone in the Nizam of Hyderabad’s court. My taaya has 5 bahus, but no daughters of his own, and he and my taayi ma chose to give this to me, as I have always been a close pet of theirs. Do you see that as sad as well???
I just read the above comments.
mA, you are extremely blessed to have jewellery belonging to your late Mother . I (my opinion), think it is a beautiful gesture to gift the pieces to your only niece.
I was gifted earrings which belonged to my Nani, given to my Mother, who gifted to me , as i am the oldest grandchild and oldest Nawasi.
