hum onti pitae karengay

faisal is here because of miandad. the selectors have to keep everone happy. after all if tauqir can have his son in the team for 4 games, y cant miandad have faisal against SA (??!)

:smack: you think Faisal Iqbal is in same class as Junaid Zia?

What abt Taufeeq Umar....is he injured or what??

I would have liked to see him in the Test Squad...

no that was not the point. i just re-instated the well known fact that in pakistan cricket, to a certain extent, its all about who u know or who ur related to. n no i don think he’s in same class as junaid

Yes Taufeeq Umar is injured. He has undergone some surgery.

I am going to miss Junaid Zia. :(

We should start a campaign on KK to bring him back. :D

Faisal Iqbal is a talented player but has failed quite consistently at international level. I think it would be fair to give the likes of Salman Butt a chance ahead of him. Besides, our problem position is the opening spot and Imran Nazir is more talented than Faisal if we are going to go with guys who under-achieve.

BTW, I don't see the official squad here. Did someone list it somewhere?

Here it is:

Squad
**Mohammad Hafeez, Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Rashid Latif (wkt), Mohammad Sami, Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Shabbir Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, Faisal Iqbal and Salman Butt.

Reserves: Asim Kamal, Imran Farhat, Faisal Athar, Danish Kaneria, Kamran Akmal and Abdul Rauf.**

 faisal is on team coz of his performance and he is a talented batsman (remember Australia’s tour of Pakistan in October 2002?) if he doesnt become the victim of our selectors he will be a very good asset in pakistan’s batting order

Thanks ehsan. Imran Nazir isn't even in the squad and i feel that he merits a place ahead of Faisal Iqbal in the one day matches in any case. Like i said, the problem spot is the openers, unless Faisal is going to open I don't see why he's been included.

Bowling wise, it'll be interesting to see how Shoaib and Sami use the new ball. Gul and Shabbir used it very well by hitting the seam and bowling accurately. Shoaib tends to be erratic and I would keep him back and give Gul and Sami the new ball.

i dont think taufiq is a better opener specially in one dayers , there are better players like imran nazir and Salman butt is an exciting player too.
taufiq may be better suited for test matches rather than one day cricket.

will DISH be showing these matches in the US?

**
I think they will cuz when first SA canceled PAK tour their website had listing for NZ, Aust tour of India but now it says "Information on upcoming tours coming soon" so I guess they are in the process of making a deal for SA PAK tour. :)

I would pay any amount ;) to watch Waseem's last match and plus watching PAK playing at home after such a long time.

didn't waseem say he is not doing the farewell thing?

no, its waqar

Waqar denies availability for benefit tie

LAHORE: Former captain Waqar Younis said that he never confirmed his availability to the national selection committee for the Shoaib Mohammad Benefit match which was to be played against South Africa at Karachi on Sept 24 , but cancelled due to the change of itinerary on grounds of security.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had announced the team for that match and included Waqar, Wasim Akram, Moin Khan and Shahid Afridi.

Waqar, who returned home on Thursday after playing the English county season, disclosed that he was not available for that match.

He said that Shoaib contacted him for the match and he had expressed unavailability because he (Waqar) was to arrive here one day after (Sept 25) of the match.

“I don’t know why PCB included my name for that match”, Waqar said.

To a question, Waqar said that he did not return to Pakistan with any hope of his selection in the team for the home series against South Africa.

Miandad, Inzamam consider SA series a big test

KARACHI: The Pakistan coach and captain have described the coming series against South Africa as a big test for their team and have promised to play positive cricket.

Dismissing the notion that the South Africans were susceptible to spin, Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq said that they had finalized no strategy to go into the series with a mindset to attack the South Africans with spin.

**“The pitches in Pakistan do tend to offer some turn to the spinners. But we have quality in both spin and pace and our key to success will be to play with a positive mindset and work really hard knowing we are up against a strong side,” Inzamam said.

“The One-day Internationals are a gamble and we have picked the best possible 16 for the series. But I think more importantly the one-dayers will give us a fair idea of how the South Africans tackle our spin and pace attack in our conditions.”

“If we feel they are uncomfortable against spin we will than try to build on this in the two Tests and if they are uncomfortable against our pace attack than we will concentrate on that,”** Inzamam added.

But he and Miandad both pointed out that everything depended on the sort of pitches that were prepared for the one-dayers and Tests.

**“We are not going to try to influence how the pitches are prepared. But obviously in the end the nature of the pitches will decide what would be our main line of attack against the South Africans,” **Miandad explained and hoped the pitches would not be as flat as those prepared against Bangladesh.

He however, dismissed the notion that the South Africans were not good players of spin.

“I think with so much cricket and tours being held these days the days are gone when teams coming to the sub-continent found it difficult to adjust to the slow and turning wickets in Pakistan or India and the spinners played a big role in deciding the outcome of a match,” Miandad said.

He made the point that although South Africa were not strong in the spin department but they were a very balanced and experienced outfit with some good allrounders and an aggressive pace attack.

**“Our players will have to be willing to work more than 100 per cent against a team like South Africa. Even if you a spinning track you have to bowl really well to take advantage of the conditions,” he noted. Inzamam said he had full faith in the quality of his pace and spin attack.

"The return of Shoaib Akhtar and the return to match fitness of Muhammad Sami is a big boost for us. And Umar Gul and Shabbir Ahmed have developed well in recent weeks.

Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq are both quality spinners and they are in the squad because they are match winners with plenty of experience between them,"** he said.

The Pakistan captain said he was not worried about the bowling but conceded the batting will have to play with resolve and purpose against the South Africans.

“I think the senior batsmen. People like me, Yousuf (Youhana), Younis, Rashid, all have to stand up and be counted. We know we can fight pace with pace against them but our success will also depend on the batsmen putting up competitive totals,” he said candidly.

Inzamam said he was confident Pakistan had the team and ability to win the series to continue their good work since the World Cup.

“It is all a question of putting the little things right. Fine turning the players and working really hard against a strong opposition,” he stated.
