Bitter rivalry is star of Bollywood show
By Noreen S. Ahmed-Ullah | Tribune staff reporter

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-indianmusic_13oct13,1,5803035.story

Even if India’s biggest music reality show limited its contestants and voters to the nation’s 1.1 billion inhabitants, Saturday’s finale would be an emotionally seismic event. Fans of the Bollywood-flavored program take their singers seriously.

But this year, organizers of “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” — an “American Idol”-style show that surpasses its rivals, including “Indian Idol” — have allowed phone-text voting from the U.S., where fans can watch the show on satellite TV and download shows from the Internet. Online voting is worldwide.

They also invited contestants from around the world, and after five months, it has come down to three finalists: two Indians and a Pakistani.

Just as the bitter rivalry on the Asian sub-continent has found its way into cricket, movies and other innocent pastimes, geopolitical undertones have transformed “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” into a sort of musical proxy war, waged on Internet sites from Palatine to Peshawar.

“Indians have a long-standing tradition with music,” said Aspi Havewala, a tech worker and Palatine resident who blogs about the show on his Web site, “Aspi’s Drift.” “There are many forums out there. Performances get analyzed, and people constantly discuss the merits and demerits of the contestants.”

Not to mention the contestants’ nationalities.

“We don’t need singers from another country,” wrote one fan.

Another wrote: “I wonder how long an Indian contestant would have lasted if this was a show in Pakistan.”

“People won’t let go of the past,” said Athar Bhatti, 42, a musician and businessman from Toronto. “They’re turning this into a political thing.”

Named for the Hindi equivalents of the musical notes “Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So,” “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” features lyrical ghazals, pop tunes, club mixes and songs from Bollywood musicals.

Last week, more than 5 million votes were cast. By far, the greatest share have come from India, where each round looks more like election day. Politicians and relatives of contestant Raja Hasan have been going door to door in his hometown, Bikaner, Rajasthan, asking for votes.

Overseas campaigning is heating up, too. Radha Sudra, 26, a software development student in Vancouver, created a site that sets voting goals for Hasan’s fans — and asks members to e-mail her with reports on how many votes they cast. She also took out a full-page ad backing Hasan in an Indian paper.

Bhatti said he hasn’t paid attention to his marble business for weeks. He wakes up and logs onto the Internet, reading the latest predictions about Ali.

“I have not been this inspired since I took up playing the guitar 15 years ago,” he said. “I started crying when I first heard him. I could feel the hair on the back of my neck standing up.”

Havewala praises his favorite Aneek Dhar for his unique sound.

“He has a future and a very sweet voice,” he said.

As the countdown progresses, fans obsess over slights to their favorite or offer conspiracy theories. For example, Zee TV, the Indian-based satellite channel, edited the end of the show that aired in North America.

What got cut? Guests giving the Pakistani, Ali, a standing ovation and demanding that he sing the song three times.

“Usually when you sing well, they make you sing it twice,” said Jibran Ilyas, 24, a graduate student at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. “But they made him sing it three times. I believe they cut it deliberately to cut his international votes.”

Dimple Shah, 22, a student at Penn State, is beginning to lose hope that Ali will win. Her parents are from India, but she sees no conflict in supporting Ali. She can’t understand why people in India can’t do the same.

Ali does seem to have strong international support. And the Indian vote tends to split along regional lines — but even a split vote leaves little opening, observers say, when the vote being split comes from one of the world’s largest nations.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

**SPOILER ALERT***

Aneek Dhar has won the Saregama contest. Raja Hasan was 2nd and as expected, Amanat Ali finished 3rd.

Disapointing end to a great show. I wanted Amanat to win, but I knew that wasn't gonna happen, so I just hoped Aneek wouldnt win, because he definetly did not deserve to win.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

^what?? I thought Raja was ahead by quite a lot of votes....I hate saregamapa.
It should've been Amanat ali or I would've been happy with Raja winning but why Aneek??
this is so stupid!

I hope Amanat and Raja get a lot of offers in addition to the ones they've already gotten from directors. Who cares if neither of them won.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

From whatever little I saw of the show.....my winner of the show would be AMANAT ALI.

That he reached this far (being a Pakistani among predominantly Indian voters) speaks volumes of his talent.

He deserves a Nishan-e-haider...as far as I am concerned.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

But Amanat's already gotten a lot of offers from directors so it's hopefully smooth sailing for him from now on.

Btw, what's Nishan-e-haider?

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

Also, could it be because Aneek was the only Hindu left in the contest.

As much as I hate to say this, but I can see my countrymen voting on religious lines.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

if that was the case then Raja wouldn't have been leading in votes for the past couple weeks. It's surprising that he didn't win.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

For the past couple of weeks...Aneek was not the only Hindu in the contest.
For example...you had Poonam Yadav....so votes get split. (Just like in Politics)...and I would stretch that to say that the Muslim votes could have got split between Amanat and Raja in the finals.

I hate to be a conspiracy-theorist....but being aware of the mentality of an Average Indian on the street (both Hindus and Muslims).....the possibility of religion influencing voting patterns does not seem far-fetched to me.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

But when the top three were raja, aneek and amanat, Raja was leading by a huge margin and aneek and amanat were pretty close with the number of votes they were getting. It doesn't make any sense for there to be any religious issue

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007…

Amanat was number 1 in international votting :hula: and he was DECLARED THE WINNER TWICE (in precious episodes). :hula: :hula:

aneek n raja boooohoooo

and himesh :slap:

… and Mussaratttt … it was nice to see him perform but i wish he could sing the whole song.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007…

that’s good to know that all our voting worked for Amanat but it’s stupid that aneek won the contest.
I tend to have a softspot for Raja so he’s still ok in my book.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

Well i wanted Amanat to win bcuz he's a real winner...he's da best of all..but i dun kno wht went wrong with ppl...neways i m not that sad bcuz i think that Aneek is way better than Raja...Raja is a solo singer while Aneek n Amanat r versatile singers...so not bad!
I loved Amanat's confidence bcz he didnt cry...!! Way to GO Amanat...u r da best..i dun care wht ppl say!

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

poora show kattaa hua tha, poora dekhaya hi nhin zee tv ne...junaid ki performance nhin ai aur baaki doosro ki nhin sirf mauli mussarat and poonam ne perform kiya stage pe and jab amanat ne yeh honsla gaya to raja and aneek ne 2 songs gaaye the amanat ne ek..india ne bohet boora kiya, amanats mom was so sad she wasn't happy

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

This is mere conjecture on my part....I have no basis to prove either ways.

Re: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007...

dude seroisuly i mean either if raja or amnat 1 it would be great but obvioiusly no muslim would win noo offense but there still winners and this show iz **** Man evry1 is mad cuzz it waz hella unfiar
