this is funny, most insecure priests have brought forth this argument. But it is totally wrong....try searching for Muslim converts on the internet and almost all of the stories are of middle to upper class white people, Europeans, doctors, teachers and so on. The fact that u mentioned black prisoners shows how much ur influenced by western propaganda. And lets assume u were right..that most converts were black prisoners, tell me whats wrong with that? Are they not humans?
I suggest you figure out what the facts are before making such a stereotypical statement.
Oh, and one more thing...4 out of 5 converts to Islam are women...so there goes ur "black prisoners" theory. But thats not the topic of the thread so i wont go into too many details.
As for Rushdie, he's a sick man. No Muslim, no matter what a non-Muslim thinks, would stand anyone insults our Prophet (saw). I suppose if a man should be allowed to express his views than we should let the KKK do that freely as well. Non-Muslims and the West simply dont understand this issue because faith is never really a part of their every day lives. The entire book is full of deliberate insults and use of swear words. To me, a writer who writes in that manner and doesnt know how to bring forth an argument in a civilized way has lost his credibility.

That explains, these must be women who fell in love with muslim men and as a result had to give up their religion in order to marry them.
Astrosfan..."Allah know the best" very good point, I agree nobody knows the complete truth. God doesn't care how we worship him or not worship him.

WHy try to find reasons (inadequate ones) to try to prove a religion wrong? facts are facts and they are pretty simple and clear..
astrofan, my remark was about u talking about leaving things up to the divine power. The fatalist theory would be contradicted by me, if teh word 'guess' didnt appear in my quote, earlier.
i agree with everybody but this is what i think happened
the rushdie affiar in the uk was political one and the imams/clerics in the uk could have reacted better in hindsight.
ever since the cold war the western world needed a new enemy and that new enemy was islam. who could forget the oklahoma bombings and who were the chief culprits ISLAM!!!
i think when you go as far as blamming the holy prophet(pbuh) and his wives then you go beyond the freedom of speech. there are some very close character sketches of a shabby businees man named mahound and his wives and what rushdie wrote was that mahound was a womaniser and had affairs and that the qu'ran was given by Allah(swt) from Satan not Jibreel(as.the holy Prophets wives are mentioned and so is the baitullah(kaaba).
becasue soon after rushdie wrote the satanic verses there was a begali women who said that the holy qu'ran had to be re-written because it was not keeping up with the times especially with the contents dealing with women
but judge for urselves!!!!!
